WELCOME
I got lucky the other day on my way home to Staten Island. Picked up two young Sailors in Brooklyn and drove them to Homeport. I asked one of them what that Medal was for and he repiled (not verbatim, I'm a FOG) about it being awarded to for him passing the course to cover every man aboard his vessel. He called it _________ (Can you give me a littlehelp here MrEmerkin?)

Sorry, but the ole' lady has me down at the paint locker, getting her 12 feet of water line. :)Seeing the "Mr" I just knew you were a Brownshoe. Secure your shit for sea, and report to the foc'sle for mailbouy watch...
Actually, as an OS, I'm a blackshoe, but was ASAC and AIC qualified, once upon a time.
Twas the next best thing to flying, sending orders to the intrepid birdmen.

Hmmm... covering every man aboard his vessel, sounds like Surface Warfare Qualifications, but it's an badge, not a medal.
It's like crosstraining, in the SF teams. You know enough about every other man's job, so you can take over, in an emergency.
Nowhere near as comprehensive, and nowadays, it's so watered down, it's given out, if you can 'splain enough about the other man's job, so they're confident you won't trip over your own feet, trying to help.

I remember the aircraft carrier off RVN had a bomb set off by an electrical arc - Think it was McCains Carrier before he was a POW. The whole deck loaded with jets started blowing up and the fire team came out only to be blown themselves. Followed by others putting foam and water on the fire making the foam useless - ergo this Surface Warfare Qualifications I would hazard a guess that makes lots of sense.

My dad was a LT(jg) on the USS Buckley (DE-51) in WWII, so I can't bad mouth the Navy too much.

Ranger Steadfast, that was either the Oriskany in 1966, or the Forrestal, in 1967. If it was the Forrestal, it was a zuni rocket, accidentally launched into a 400gallon fuel tank on an A-4, parked in the middle of a bunch of fueled, and bomb laden aircraft.I remember the aircraft carrier off RVN had a bomb set off by an electrical arc - Think it was McCains Carrier before he was a POW. The whole deck loaded with jets started blowing up and the fire team came out only to be blown themselves. The Navy went back, and re-evaluated it's lessons learned from WWII, and after that, every squid who went to sea, had to become first, and foremost, a fireman, qualified in damage control. Like our sister service, the USMC, where every marine is a rifleman, regarless of the MOS, every sailor who goes to sea, had better be able to jump out of the rack, at a moments notice, and fight the worst fire, they've ever seen in their lives.
I'm sure that y'all have your poignant training moments, but the thing that I remember most vividly, and never will forget to this day, is advanced Damage control training, where they lock you and 5 others in a steel box, with a flashlight, 2 fire hoses, and then ignite 200 gallons of diesel fuel, and tell you to "put it out". Your OBA (Oxygen Breathing apparatus) is good for about 20 minutes if you're hyperventilating, so that's your time limit.
I'm not ashamed, to admit, that I peed my damn pants, when that stuff torched off.

Sen. McCain ejected out of his A-4 on the deck as I recall, but it was on the Forrestal.

Negative GhostRider. McCain did not eject from his craft. He merely dropped to the deck and rolled away from the ensuing flames and explosions. Saw it on the History Channel, jes couldn't remember some particulars.KW Driver wrote:Sen. McCain ejected out of his A-4 on the deck as I recall, but it was on the Forrestal.
