Greetings, Rangers, Vetereans, and Family Members.

Post by Redleg »

Hey, all!

I have been a lurker here for some time, returning from time to time to soak up some more of that acerbic brand of humor I know Rangers are famous for.

Before I introduce myself, let me say that I appreciate your service and know, that as the son of a Ranger, you do our country proud.

Up until 3 days ago, I was a defense contractor at US Joint Forces Command in Suffolk, Virginia. For about 2 years, it's been eating away at me that while contractors make a good living for their families, not very many of them experience the job satisfaction of being a professional soldier. So, even though *today* was supposed to be my last day, I told my boss to stick it a few days early.

I return to active duty with the Nasty Girl....er National Guard on Monday. I know it's not the 173rd, but I need to ease my wife into the prospect of me being a fulltime soldier again.

Before I left active duty, I was headed for the 3-319 FA. I injured my knee for the third time and decided that that was it and REFRADed.

It's taken me a while to realize that my first professional love is with the Army, and so my decision to get back in. I am incredibly excited about getting back into uniform and serving alongside the best people our country has to offer.

Anyways, I am looking forward to discussing some things with the Ranger vets on this board. I am pushing 33 years old, but I would really like to fulfill my dream of following in my Dad's footsteps and becoming a Ranger, myself.

Once again, it's been a pleasure reading your stories and advice and I'm looking forward to becoming an active poster on this forum.

He was an FA officer...he died a little over 8 years ago, but I know he was a graduate of Eastern Washington University in 1966, Ranger School sometime later that year.

Went to Vietnam on the 4th of July 1967, served with the 173rd in operations around Dak To in the central highlands. He was the FSO for A/1-503 (I think...I can't be sure anymore) when they ran into NVA on Hill 882. The 173rd chased the NVA off that hill and then had to hump over to Hill 875 to join the action there.

If you ever see any of those Sky Soliders books or photos about these battles, there's a good sequence of my dad. He's behind a large tree. He carried a shotgun as his primary weapon, but you see him emptying that, then reaching behind him for his RTO to hand him an M-16.

In this picture, my Dad is the one shooting at NVA higher on the hill. His shotgun is next to his knee. If anybody has any better pictures...

Anyways, he went on to serve at Ft Sill, the War College at Carlisle Barracks (when I was born), Neu Ulm, and Augsburg Germany. He was the 7th Corp's RTOC commander when Desert Shield and Desert Storm kicked off. In 1998 he died of a massive coronary at our home in Rohrdorf, Germany...about 5 km from Austria.

He was a damned good father and I'm sure he was a damned good soldier.
