All,
For Christmas, I bought my son a Remington 870(28 inch barrel) that came with a 'MOD' choke and my questions are how/when do I select other chokes to use in the gun?
He'll use it for skeet and dove hunting.

The Mod choke standard in the 870 while not condusive to heavy competition shooting is adequate (if not preferred) for slow for moderate skeet. Been using the mod for duck, dove, geese, rabbits, cats, coyotes,(buck shot) varmits, skeet, quail..... for many years. Going to a full or any other version is an expense you really dont need to incur. Mod gives you moderate shot spread dead center target. He won't need anything else and will have to rely on actually targeting the bird.

As the pastor said, you will be fine with a modified choke for skeet and doves. If you ever hunt turkeys, you'll want to tighten it down to at least a full, extra full, or an aftermarket gobbler choke.
Also, don't ever fire any type of slug out of it, rifled or sabot, with that modified choke in it. You need a rifled barrel for sabot slugs. With a smoot bore, as your is, shoot a rifled slug through an improved cylinder choke.
But if all you intend on doing is wing shooting, modified chokes will be all you'll need.

I appreciate the information Rangers Abell9 and Creeping Death. It's nice to know that I shouldn't have to buy anything else except shells.(for the time being)
Thanks for your time,
