OBC Officer,RIP Ranger Regiment

Post by Buck27 »

When I posted my intro I was sure I wanted to go the enlisted 75th Ranger Regiment route. After a few visits to my brother at obc in Fort Leonard Wood MO I am not so sure what route to take. I got the opportunity to talk to a few Captions about the issue (one ex-sf) and they spelled it out for me. They were both pre-enlisted turned officer and they made leadership sound like the best option. I know everyone must choose what best fits them but I seek advice. You all have an inside view of the army and I respect your opinions. What do you feel is the better decision and why. Im looking to you guys for the experienced outlook on the two alternatives as opposed to the goarmy.com videos where everybody smiles and lives happily ever after. Thank you all for you time. Buck27

Buck27, I have served with some damn good Officers, but in my opinion some of the best were prior NCO.

If you start at the bottom and work your way up you learn first hand what it takes to get the job done. You know what the little guy has to do and go through. This way you have a total understanding of the whole process of leadership.

I guess that is a matter of perspective or timeing. Now I realize that thier are some JAM up Officers out there that used to be NCO's. However, The absolute worst officers I have encountered were prior service NCO's.

A few were top notch. Great leaders. But the vast majority sucked ass.
I surmised the reason for this was they "thought" they had seen everything and done it all. So they became untrainable.

I would rather have a very moldable young impressionable LT that looks to be about 12 years old......much easier to guild. Because when it comes down to it ,as a PSG, you are going to be the one that gets your nuts hammered flat for the Plt being jacked up .......not the PL.

Thank you Ranger AbnRgr289, Ranger rgrpuck, and Paratrooper CAL for your responses. Paratrooper CAL, the captions treated me like gold because they knew I was thinking of joining in the spring. They both emphasized money as a large reason to become an officer along with the belief that since I had a college education I would be better at leading men than being led. I absorbed everything they had to say and thank them for sharing that knowledge, but they are both in the engineer core and my first pick would be infantry. They also let me play army for a weekend by doing a four mile ruck run and a 5 mile run with the platoon. The main reason I was persuaded to think about becoming an officer is because the two captions I spoke to were good guys and good leaders. I also spoke to a former Ranger Regiment guy (dont remember the name) and he told me about some of the "obstacles" that a cherry to the 75th must face. His stories didnt sound fun, but it is that kind of dedication and commitment that I seek. And Ranger rgrpuck, If I go officer I will be the young impressionable LT that you describe, but I think I look about 13. Thank you for your time and responses. Buck27
