OSUT, and RIP Gradutation Smokings

Post by proud dad »

I have been thinking back to my Son's gradutations from Osut and when we attended the turning blue ceremony. We were accompanied by my nephew and his wife who lived in Columbus and is a former Ranger from 3rd Batt. At the ceremony as the soldiers passed by in formation my nephew yells out "Can't smoke (last name)!" and "(Last name) your momie loves you!" it was funny to me but I could see my son turn pale and I figured I was going to see him knock out a few pushups. Nothing happened to him in front of the parents but I think he took some heat behind the scenes.
That was nothing compared to his RIP Gradutation though. Again we were accompanied by my nephew and the ceremony was to be held outside at the Ranger memorial but it started raining just prior to the beginning and they decided to move indoors. Well this time as they passed by in formation my nephew again yells out " I bet a little rain wouldn't have stopped the marines!" I could actually see the blood vessels throbbing in a RI temples as he looked our way, scared me just meeting his gaze. I think my son payed for that in sweat for a long while afterward.

That was funny....when my jarhead buddy was in boot, we sent him care packages with, "Marines are just wannabe Rangers", "Can't smoke Abend", "Abend, son't let those pussy DI's get you down, etc."......Good Times, Good Times........

Of course, he went to Marine boot before I went to Army boot........

There was a guy in my RIP class who's last name was Luna. I believe he was Guamanian or Pacific Islander...If you've ever been around those types of folks (Think SGM LG or SGM Magana) They have big families AND they are really tight with every other Guamanian around.

Anyhow, this guy Luna, his entire frickin family were Rangers, or something like that. He was getting visited all the time, and all the visits were the smoking kind-good natured, but he was still getting dropped a lot. I heard his uncle came over from Third Batt and made his cherry jump with him at BAC.

Seemed like a good guy, but I guess he couldn't take the pressure of what his family expected of him or something. I was told he pretty much quit within the first few days of his initial smoking on arrival in B-co, 2/75.
