Each company of Napolean's light infantry was commanded by captain and divided into 2 sections. when skirmishing it was divided into 3 sections. They were left, right and center. The left and right had their bayonets removed on the when on the skirmish line. The center section did not remove their bayonets. Their primary target were the enemy officer's, gunners, and skirmishers.

A company would first march 200 paces away from the battalion when sent in to act as skirmishers. The left and right section would march forward a 100 paces while the center acted as a reserve. The skirmeshers would were always in twos and fired one at a time so that one was always loaded. the intervals between the twos would be 15 paces. They would use just about everything in sight as cover. When the skirmishers were out in the open field and threatened by cavalry, they would form what was called a clump, or a circle, rallying on the center section that was in the rear.
