Greetings from Sunny Phoenix
Happened upon this site while searching for funny anecdotes regarding Ranger School diets for my GF (a dietician).
I'm not surprised that the humor and stories remain the same, although somewhat unique to the year/decade served. My Ranger class occured during a time of transition from Vietnam to Volar. The Ranger Bats had just been activated and were beginning to send their corporals and buck sergeants (advance one rank upon being tabbed--quite an incentive). Gone were the 12-day Florida patrols, now replaced with 3 4-day ones (emphasizing counter-guerrilla ops). While the increased number of insertion operations meant lunch at the USAF messhall (jungle fatigues can hold an amazing number of ice-cream sandwiches), they also meant more of the formal patrol order grading phases--difficult for many to pass (who had time for rehearsals???)
Memories of Uncle Bernie (an institution at Harmony Church in the mid-70's). My Platoon, 4th Platoon, was a hodgepodge of legs (about 20 of us diverted from Airborne school to TOW & Dragon class--remember those), 5 or 6 Blackhats--which later came in handy once we did go to jump school, and about 10 Canadians from Princess Pat's CLI). Well, Uncle Bernie had the Canadians teach the entire Ranger Company British D&C. Harbingers of things to come. We weren't very good. In a later unit's change of command (5SFG), I was reminded why when the reviewing officer said that while we very good at a lot of things, marching wasn't one of them.
Fun times they were (from 30 years distance)
