I determined they were hippies because of their glassy eyed stares, and the fact that they weren't trying to get their bear on. This proves that their only intention was to become one with nature, a purely hippie trait.
It also appears that they have distracted the bear with some sort of hippie paraphernalia, perhaps a proto-pipe.
