DS1979,
I am thinking you are going to make a much better effort to fix this than you just have... Your apology was weak at best and more importantly, you've offended not just my Brother, but many members of my Brotherhood. Unlike them, I am not geographically challenged in getting to your AO. So, we can indeed work this bitch shit out...
I encourage you in the strongest way possible to work this all out, redeem not just yourself, but your Post, your other DI's and the many DEP's who are now trying to figure out how a retard could get through the system. It's not so hard to fix, correct???
I wish you good luck in accomplishing this, in the public forum or by whatever means you, Vee and the other Brother's work out. Just clear it up so the entire world doesn't think that the Army has fucking retard's for DI's. I thank you sincerely in advance for your efforts.
Again Good Luck,
tacp

I don't think anyone has ever questioned if any LRRP was a Ranger or not just because they didn't go to Ranger school. Just like I am sure a Darby Ranger wouldn't question a Ranger who didn't fight for 4 years of WW2 either. If that was the case then probably only WW2 Rangers would qualify as they fought until the war was over or they were dead.hobbit wrote:If you come to the 101st Airborne Division LRRP/Ranger reunion in Branson, and ask of the Vietnam LRRP/Rangers in attendance there "Who amongst you attended Ranger school and who amongst you didn't, the most likely answer you'll get is, "Why do you want to know, motherfucker?!"
I didn't attend Ranger school. Neither did my team leader, David Hazelton. We both attended jump school, and both went through Special Forces training at Ft. Bragg, but the chances of getting a slot with the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam, were, believe it or not, pretty slim by late 1969 & 1970.
We both volunteered for Vietnam and we both volunteered for the 101st Airborne Division's Ranger Company. In other words, we traded in green berets for black ones.
Why did so many non-Ranger school graduates serve with the 101st Airborne Division's Ranger Company? Read the history books! It gets pretty obvious after the first dozen pages.
The simple truth of the matter is that a shitload of Ranger School graduates going to Vietnam DIDN'T VOLUNTEER for Ranger duty once they got to Vietnam, so the debit in personnel had to be made up by anyone with the intestinal fortitude to volunteer.
Flying out to the Laotian side of the Chaine Anamatique Mountains and jumping off a slick with four of your closest buddies didn’t really hold all that much appeal for many Ranger school graduates, especially during monsoon when you were cut off from commo and any other support for days sometimes, surrounded by 200,000 dinks, freezing your ass off at night and nearly dropping from heat exhaustion during the day. Believe it or not, engaging in such activity could, at times, become very dangerous indeed.
Here’s my Ranger tab. The school one had to attend to win this Ranger tab was the toughest ever dreamed up by the US Army. The men who earned it are justifiably proud. I wouldn’t recommend telling any of them they aren’t Rangers because they didn’t attend Ranger kindergarten at Ft. Benning.
Some Rangers never had combat, was it their fault or timing. In 93, a Ranger company fought like hell and lost many brothers. The rest of the Regiment was training. So are they the only Rangers just because they saw combat and the others weren't chosen.
I don't think anyone on this site has ever said Ranger school makes you a Ranger, in fact it is the opposite. Rangers are considered Rangers if they served in a Ranger unit. Ranger school is just that, a school.
75th Regiment Rangers have always said Ranger school is just a qualification, the Ranger Scroll is a way of life. Which includes anyone who ever served in a Ranger unit.
Ranger2
Point well taken Ranger2. Here's a related story. In 2000, I toured Western Canada in my motorhome. In the southern Alberta town of Nanton, is located the Nanton Lancaster Bomber Museum. The museum was founded by three wealthy local farmers, all retired, all of whom had gotten pretty affluent after selling off their land.
The southern Alberta area where the museum is located produced an inordinately high number of bomber crewmen during WWII (some 200 or thereabout). They served in Lancaster bombers with the RCAF and RAF. Many were killed in action. The Nanton Lancaster Bomber Museum was intended as a cenotaph to honor these young farm boys as much as it was a war museum.
The day I visited was a beehive of activity. Former Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney was due to show up for the official dedication of the museum on the following day. Lots of dignitaries were due to show up, but the most interesting sidelight of the event was to be the awarding of pilot's wing's to an 80 year-old WWII veteran.
He'd never gone through flight school you see, so he'd never been officially awarded pilot's wings. He was typical of many RCAF or RAF bomber crewmen who flew raids over Germany for three years before America entered the war. British and Canadian losses were staggering then, more than 50%. Pilots couldn't be trained fast enough, so crewmen on the bombers (gunners, bombardiers, or navigators) started sitting in the right seat and learning how to fly bombers via OJT.
The old fellow who was scheduled to finally get his pilot's wings at the museum the following day, flew 44 combat missions over Germany (not in the right seat of his Lancaster bomber mind you), but in the left seat -the commander's seat. He was typical of RAF and RCAF flight sergeants, NCOs who became bomber pilots during WWII by virtue of on-the-job training. He'd never gone to "flight school" though, thus he'd never gotten official orders for his pilot's wings. So besides dedicating the museum, Canada was also finally taking care of a long-overdue award ceremony in Nanton that eventful afternoon.

OK unlike everyone else who had a snappy comeback I have done a little research. I can now definitively demonstrate the difference between being Ranger Qualified and being a Ranger.
the correct nomenclature to use follows:
1. Ranger-qualified: graduates of the Ranger course, whether in leg-land, civilians, former Batt-boys, whatever. You earned a tab, you are Ranger-qualified.
2. Former Ranger. Reserved for former members of the Ranger Battalions or Ranger Regiment. If not also Ranger-qualified, the expression should be qualified with the phrase "tabless puke" or something along those lines.
Living the life in a Battalion is what it is, and only those who have done it understand. Life in a Battalion is very different after you are Ranger-qualified. Life in a Battalion is also very different from life in Group, or life in any other military unit. Wearing the scroll means you are a warrior monk, particularly as an enlisted man. O's definitely got it easier. Don't matter. The Regiment, and the Battalions, exist to create and sustain Rangers, and to deliver Rangers to the point of the spear.
3. Ranger: current, serving members of the Ranger Regiment. Period. Regardless of MOS, or branch. Again, if not tabbed, the qualifier "tabless puke" or something similar should be added.
