Ranger Cliv03, I have put on that weight over the span of about almost 3 months. I have a few sessions left with him, after that it will be all on my own initiative. To be honest, I was under the impression that I need to be a fairly large guy to be able to hack it when it came to training for other units past basic. I've been a skinny guy my entire life and I don't want my body in the way of my goals in the Army. I am confident I can press my mind to go on, but I'm only afraid my body would give out. I just want to be able to pull my own weight and even help a buddy out if I had to. Thank you for the advice.

Ranger Cliv03, No roids sir. I'm wondering if my small size will be a detriment to becoming a Ranger. I will be focusing on my endurance heavily in the coming weeks. It sounds like endurance training is going to benefit me greater then strength training. The thing that concerns me right now is being able to do those ruck marches with 60+ pound packs and still be ready to fight afterwards.

Gerald:

I was a 20 year old squad leader in Viet-Nam at 5' 11" at 147 pounds. I was around 150 several years later as a Ranger student. It isn't the size of the man in the fight...

Now that I have your attention, you were directed to self-administer a diagnostic PT test along with chin-ups (Hands out). That shuld be your next task.

Don't make this too difficult. You appear to be a fine young man in spite of residing in Grainola Land (land of fruits, flakes and nuts). If you truly want to earn a place in the 75th Ranger Regiment, you came to the right site. One of the objectives of our existing as a site is the number of young men, like yourself, we have assisted in their preparation for service in the Ranger Regiment. Just relax, continue to read and absorb the information contained in the FAQs, as well as selected stickies and threads. Never, never quit.

Ranger Jim, thank you and I understand now. Less talking, more listening and definitely more doing. Off to do my daily PT.

At 5'9", you are probably close to your target weight, worry more about endurance and MENTAL conditioning. It isn't that hard to train if someone is standing over you.....it's a whole different story when you're doing it on your own and can quit whenever you THINK you've had enough.

I don't like to read my own quotes. What part of my guidance did you not understand? OK, You now have 48 hours to complete the task. Make that midnight 23 May 2007. What are your questions?

Ranger Jim, I knocked out the PT test last night. Results from two minute timings:

Push ups: 35
Sit ups: 58
Two minute mile time: 16:29
Chin ups: 10
Pull ups: 8

These numbers need improvement I know for sure.

For all that weight you put on you sure as hell didn't gain any strength did you? 35 push-ups? WTFO?

You run sucks too. Lose the trainer and start running and pushing.

Don't answer this post, Ranger Jim has his sights on you, respond to him when spoken too.

The reason I gave you the task is two-fold;
First, it establishes a baseline to measure your porgress as you develop your physical fitness.
Second, to clarify that when you are given a task by one of the Rangers, you are expected to execute it promptly.

For your next task, please explain (in your own words) why you wish to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment. Somewhere 100 - 250 words (Do not cut and paste) of your own thoughts.

Ranger Jim, The reason I want to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment is to know that I can be one of the best of the best. I want to prove not only to myself but to my family that I can achieve and become something much bigger then where I am now. I also want to honor my grandfather's wishes and become a soldier to honor my family and his efforts in fighting the Japanese in the Philippines during WWII.
To be able to serve in such a unit as the 75th Ranger Regiment is one of high honor and distinction, both of which I highly prize and desire. As in my civilian life, I need to know that the people I serve with are capable, ready and willing to do what it takes to get the job done, without question, whatever it may be, and that I can rely on them in case of need. With that said, I must also be able to meet and exceed those same standards for myself. Those standards will not only help me in being a better soldier, but will help me be a better person overall. I believe the 75th Ranger Regiment contains the characteristics I seek and more.

Ranger Jim, I retried my two minute pushup and 2 mile time today.

48 pushups
2mile time of 14:38

I knew I could push harder then the first time I tried it. I'm paying for it right now, but having my body hurt and walking in pain hasn't felt so good before.
I have a long way to go but I believe I can reach my goal.

If you set your mind to it, you can do it. The hardest thing to do is get off your ass and make it happen.

Make sure you stretch before and after you workout. Stretch a couple times during the day, it will help you recover faster. If a certian muscle hurts, stretch it. Force yourself to muscle failure when you do PT. There is no one in this world that can be harder on you, then you! Use that to your advantage, it's the only way you can better yourself and achieve the goals you seek.

OK, a little wordy, and super-idealistic, but it will do. My intention is just to have you think about what you are doing. Several months from now, you need to reconsider your words. You get a go at theis station. Continue to push your running.
