I fail to see where General McChrystal offered his resignation.

from an abstract viewpoint, I can see it that way.

The General is privvy to actions that none of us are aware of in relation to the current administration and its goals for Afghanistan. The problem is, if he just up and resigned it would crush the morale in the AO, and have long term detrimental effects that would likely reach well beyond Big O's sell by date.

By issuing an interview with less than shining comments to a know instigator rag like Rolling Stone, he may have found a way to step out of the shit storm in a relatively obfuscatious manner.

Well, just like Ranger Ingraham said, he obviously has taken this course of action for a reason. I don't know anything about the man, but I would assume that one does not pin on stars on your uniform without knowing what to correctly say, when to say it, and where to say it. This was not a " slip of the tongue " in my opinion. There is a much larger plot going on.
