Attacks intensify in Iraq as U.S. nears combat troop exit

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Attackers created havoc across Baghdad on Thursday, with eight people killed and dozens wounded, including nine U.S. troops, authorities said.

The assaults followed a major blast that killed 72 people and injured about 135 others at a Baghdad market Wednesday and a deadly blast in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk on Saturday that killed 80 people.

Violence is unnerving Iraqis, with attacks increasing as the United States works toward withdrawing combat troops.

The plan to remove combat troops from Iraqi cities and towns by June 30 was spelled out in the American bilateral agreement with Iraq. Security responsibilities will be left to Iraqis and American forces are to remain only as trainers and advisers.

After the market attack in the slum of Sadr City, Baghdad saw eight more strikes from Wednesday night into Thursday afternoon.
