US and Cuba to normalize relations

Post by Flesh Thorn »

Mr Obama said Washington's current approach was "outdated" and the changes were the "most significant" in US policy towards Cuba in 50 years.

Cuban President Raul Castro said he welcomed the shift in a TV address.

The move includes the release of US contractor Alan Gross and three Cubans held in the US.

Wednesday's announcements follow more than a year of secret talks in Canada and at the Vatican, directly involving Pope Francis.

Raul Castro said through an interpreter, that President Obama should lift the embargo through executive order. Looks like he knows as much about our Constitution as Barack Obama.

I have foreseen this. The majority of economies in the Caribbean are heavily invested in American tourist dollars: once Cuba is open for business, these other nation's economies will fall flat. Meanwhile, the Chinese and Venezuelan presence is looming in these other countries, just drooling to exploit the other industries and their resources. I was in Dominica a couple years ago...China is building highways and other infrastructure there; the people I spoke with generally believe it is because China is just being nice. Without serious proactive US planning, once these other countries lose the American tourist dollars, the entire region will be just like Haiti in short order- no economy and totally exploited of their natural resources. The only way to save their economies will be to become totally dependent on the Chinese/Venezuelan development of their other resources, and as such, become subordinate territories for all practical purposes. The new found wealth Cuba will find, meanwhile, will make those in charge the new regional power brokers... They'll have new money to invest in development and modernization...but will they do business and buy from us, or will they partner up with the other non-Caribbean countries who are quietly gaining control of the industrial development and resources available in neighboring countries?

My perception may not be 100% accurate; I may be overestimating the economic impact of American tourism on these other countries, and underestimating the other market sectors. Regardless, I have serious concerns that those who are supposed to be leading our foreign policy and planning are totally overlooking the dynamic consequences of an "open Cuba".

For U.S. businesses and tourists, opportunities abound in Cuba

Bay of Pigs veterans feel 'abandoned again' by US
I know several Bay of Pigs vets. Served in El Salvador with, Felix Rodriguez, Lew Rodriguez, Juan Lopez, among others. Strong dudes. Many of them enlisted and served in Viet-Nam. Small world.

Anyone seen Alpha House on Amazon? They talked about this. Some hard line Cuban Refugees are going to be pissed if the government tries reconciliation.

The zealotry displayed by some of the American Cuban community often makes the Taliban seem tame. Many in South Florida have made an industry out of it, all to the potential detriment to those still stuck in the 50s in Cuba.
