I don't think Petraeus even cares about gun control. I think he is looking for a hot-button topic to jump on to get his name back out there and try to skyrocket to relevancy once again. Allow me to paraphrase what my esteemed colleagues from the Puking Buzzard division said--"fuck that guy".

It had the possibility to come out of the gate swinging but Big AF in their infinite (lack of) wisdom decided that the J model didn't need a 105mm cannon. Of course once the bean counters realized that their "smart" munitions were too expensive to shoot often the AF determined that the 105 had to go...

If he manages to come back on active duty he will probably be pigeon-holed somewhere he won't want to be. I don't see him ever being on the line again. I think the book-and-lecture circuit is a more likely avenue for him.
