Career change to strategic consulting

I’ve been thinking a lot about what to do after I leave the military, and I’ve been looking into some strategy consulting firms that specialize in rapid-response business transformation. I came across a network of independent consultants who claim they can step in within 48 hours to resolve management or restructuring issues. Basically, they’re selling pure performance and responsiveness, a real Ultra Strategy approach if you ask me. Honestly, I wonder if our hands-on profiles really interest these kinds of high-end firms, or if it’s just to make their website look good. Does the rigor and crisis management we have here really carry any weight against guys who graduated from top business schools? If any of you have already made the leap into that world, I’d love to hear your feedback. We need to figure out if this is a real opportunity or if we’re just going to be used as a field-based prop for their marketing.
