Aren't these just the old very heavy steel plates? Now sort of common in the civilian world due it's low cost?

The question to ask is what will be the purpose of the plates? If you want them for backup body armor and won't be wearing them on a regular basis I'd say have at it. They can take a beating but are heavy. I have an old set of steel plates/spall bags at the house in a plate carrier I use for PT.
