19 firefighters killed battling fast-moving Ariz. wildfire

YARNELL, ARIZ. Gusty, hot winds blew an Arizona blaze out of control Sunday in a forest northwest of Phoenix, overtaking and killing 19 members of an elite fire crew in the deadliest wildfire involving firefighters in the U.S. in decades.

This is horrible. We can only hope such a huge catastrophe will inspire technical innovations aimed at saving future firefighter's lives. This is probably the worst loss of firefighter lives since 9/11. If this many firefighters are concentrated in a high-wind area where fires can shift direction at the whim of the wind, they need a water tanker aircraft circling close by. At least this way, the tanker can dump its water load between the firefighters and the fire, giving them a far better chance of outrunning the conflagration. God rest their souls. This is really very sad. They died heroes every one.

Absolutely agree. Rest in peace all. Goddamn shame.

Anyone have comms with Lunch? Hes with a forest unit somewhere. Hope he's safe.

Thankfully as far as AZ is concerned the monsoons should start in the next week or so and that should kill off the fire danger until the fall.

Any idea if this might have been set by the Mexican drug dealer/army or an act of terrorism. Both are valid tactics with those two
