GOP candidate military service

Post by goon175 »

At the link below, you can find the comparison between the candidates' respective military service records. I was particularly dissapointed in Romney's. I am sure the RVN vets on this site will feel much stronger about his record. I don't hold it against a guy if he never served, but when you got 5 years of deferments during a draft? That just says a little too much about your charachter, in my opinion.

And oh by the way, since when does France need missionaries? I could ALMOST justify that if it were to Africa, undeveloped Asia, etc., but FRANCE??

yeah I know in general line of thought process that does seem odd. on that note. My dads cousin is a missionary living in S.Germany all of about 2 hrs drive from OUR/THE Family Hometown village in the Alps foothills. His target audience is the Swiss.."just over the mtns." my take I guess is that even in the most wealthy nations have "unchurched" folks so its not a far shot to think that there are missionaries floating around in those nations too.

Side note I got an invite to go on a "(construction) MIssion trip" to Alaska next summer ( to a island village roughtly 3 hrs by ferry due west of Juneau?) from a guy I know last week. wife wants to do it..Paid trip out. no set day for return. fly back whenever you want after the Mission part is done..

Funny............... you won't see shit ANYWHERE about Barry's service or anyone in his immediate vicinity. IMO..... all cowards, all socialists, all out to destroy everything we know as Americans.

Overheard in Africa... "Missionaries... the other white meat"

To give the missionaries their due, we are one of the most Christian nation on Earth (as per numbers attending church, or consider themselves "active"), though those numbers have dropped over the years. Europe's numbers haven't declined slightly, they have pretty much assumed the delta position and are screaming to earth at breakneck speed. This is due to many factors, but the biggest are liberalism, rise of socialism and the influx or Islam.

So, sending missionaries there makes more sense than sending them to Africa or undeveloped Asia, which has a larger number of Christians.

Don't get me wrong guys, I am a devout Christian, and fully support mission trips along with having been on a few myself before I joined the Army. But when your nation is calling upon every abled body man via a draft..... like I said, I question his character.

On this note, what was the average hitch of a draftee in this time frame? I thought it was 2 years or one combat tour? The way I see it, that would have left him with plenty enough time to spread the Morman word, go to college, and all that other good stuff, without leaving the dirty work to everyone else.

I'll give Mitt the benefit of the doubt.

I read a book recently by Condaliza Rice who said the only way her father could go to college was to be a preacher, paid for by a religious organization. She also said that her father met many friends at the University who did likewise.
On Mitt: I believe it was the Mormon Church decided where he was to go. He may have had a few choices to pick from.
I read he came back and faced the draft (for 1 year) and survived with a high # but he did face the draft. But he is pounding his chest so you can hear he survived the front lines of the draft.

I know a Vet at my local VA that is the contact person who lives in my town to help recent grads from his Mormon Church University to ease into their new surroundings.
I thought it was 2 years or one combat tour?
I can agree with this thought.

I dunno.

There is a fairly good list of Mormons that served in the military. Not extensive, but certainly it exists.

It's obvious to me this was not a priority for Romney. Or for that matter any of his sons- but "it is, what it is" and just one measure of a candidate.

By the way- what branch did Obama serve in? Clinton? Oh wait, both Carter and Johnson were Navy guys. We see how well that worked out.

Sounds like you REALLY, REALLY REGRET voting for the guy! :P

I regret for our country that we have sunk to a depth that has our founding fathers turning in their graves.

I'm not a Mitt fan, but will say this. Although I was in diapers at the time I am quite sure there were not a whole lotta people (shall we say) eager to go to VN via the draft. Many stepped up and many more when called served. But beating the guy up because his number wasn't called, especially when compared to Slick Willie who was in Moscow actively participating in the festivities in Red Square (see the book "Head of his Class") is a little over the top. Obviously, between Slick Willie's contributions to the VN war effort (in my opinion a "traitor"), denying 18 of our Brothers the AC-130 support they desperately needed, causing their untimely deaths (just to support his legacy) and the systematic downsizing of our military (which cost us dearly in the early part of the war on terror), coupled with a the first blatantly socialist/muslim "anti-American" POTUS.......... Well, this tells me that Mitt (like him or not) is more than qualified to be POTUS.

Never said I liked Clinton either.

This revelation isn't a bar to my vote. I was heavily favoring him prior to this. But this has given me more to think about. This isn't a case of his number not being called (yes I know there is one year that he was eligible and drew a high number), the fact that he deferred for SO many years is what is troublesome to me. I'm sure he would do better than the current POTUS. I have no doubts there. Maybe I just have this fantasy vision of the perfect candidate and I am just doomed to be dissapointed for the rest of my voting life. such is life...
