Re: Are you a racist?
So I open my MSN.com homepage and what do I see under today's picks
When to call someone 'racist'
yes curiousity got the better of me and I clicked on it, should be working but I clicked on it
below is the link to get to the primer on racism that clicking away got me to:
http://www.slate.com/id/2231002/?gt1=38002
This primer opens up with
"More than a few naive souls hoped that the election of Barack Obama signaled a new era of racial harmony. Instead, alas, American race relations have entered a bizarre new phase in which tension is ubiquitous and almost anyone can claim to be the victim of racism."
And concludes with
Racism is still a force to be reckoned with in American society. But we should think twice before jumping to the convenient conclusion that people who don't agree with us must be bigots. And we should call the bluff of people who play the race card for rhetorical advantage or political gain, whether they're leftist agitators or right-wing blowhards. There may never be consensus on what counts as racism and when it's in play. But this lexicon should give you a place to start for deciphering the many conversations about race that will no doubt continue.
I bolded the summary since I felt it states what I've been thinking nicely.
For me, just don't understand why people cannot treat another they way they want to be be treated! Seems pretty simple to me.

Re: Are you a racist?
Because quite frequently people want to be treated in a different way than their behavior dictates.Jenny Lynn wrote:For me, just don't understand why people cannot treat another they way they want to be be treated! Seems pretty simple to me.
That said....
Racism (traditional definition): the belief that your race is inherently superior to all others or that one particular race is inherently inferior to yours.
Bigotry: Disliking or hating a person or cultural segment because of race.
Prejudice: Having a pre-conceived bias regarding a person's personality or behavior based on racial or cultural stereotypes.
Racism (moder definition): Combine above definitions.
Racism & Bigotry are for lazy, uncreative people. It's pretty easy to find an individual reason to not like anyone.
Prejudice is a survival mechanism, and we all apply it every day without realizing it. Not just with other humans, but other animals, plants, etc. For instance I am prejudiced to think that a lion will try to eat me, or that lawyers will screw me out of money no matter what.
