Protein?

Post by Rabbit »

Rangers and other fitness gurus,
What are your thoughts on things like muscle-builders and stuff that you buy at the GM. I mean for me, it just doesn't feel natural that you need to rely on a source other than eating right, and working out? Your thoughts. I am in doubt if I should go out and buy something extra just for the fact of quick muscle gain....
Thank you gentlemen.

Eating right gets you all the stuff you need. A protein shake can't hurt you though. Some people say creatine is a good supplement, but I have no personal experience with it. The key to building strength and endurance is exercise and running.

I know I'm not a Ranger, but my advice about using creatine is to avoid it, if you're training to get ready to go away to Basic/Airborne/RIP.. Creatine is a performance enhancing substance, that, if you didn't know, is naturally made by your liver, and assists your muscles in getting nutrients and hydration more efficiently. Sure, it's good for you when you're a gym bum, but when you won't be using it at Basic/Airborne/RIP, then why would you want to rely on it beforehand?? Your numbers will be slightly inflated, giving you a sort of "false satisfaction."

Protein shakes are a good substitute to eating right, and maintaining a positive protein level in your body, but eating right is key..

Going to be alittle long winded here but hopefully everyone will find this informative.

Creatine:
"What Does It Do? The archetypical performance supplement, creatine is likely the most impressive product to come out in the last 30 years. In addition to increasing muscle size, there’s an accompanying strength increase. Add on top of that the improvement in our ability to perform repeated maximal efforts, and you have one damn effective supplement. Creatine is also known to stimulate the process of muscle growth and repair (think recovery), which is why it scores so highly on The Anabolic Index scoring system." - http://www.sherdog.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Creatine is naturally made in the body and if cycled properly will only benefit the user, while creatine hasn't been around as extensively as say...aspirin the long term effects cannot really be documented current studies show little harm in creatine.

If taken probably and a quality creatine is used it will only benefit the user and increase his/her training. After you cycle off of creatine (Which I am currently), your recovery time will be alittle slower, you will lose some water weight and its possible you will lose alittle muscle defintion depending on your training schedule. But then again if you stopped eating healthy your strength, muscle defintion etc would be effected then as well...supplements are simply that...they SUPPLEMENT your diet. With today's life style food is more of a pleasure than it is survival which has created things like five guys, mcdonalds, etc which creates a need for vitamins/fish oil etc in our diet.

Creatine is one of the top supplements for athletes today and on top of that it is legal and safe, there is plenty of research and I mean PLENTY of research done on creatine available to the general public. I cannot speak on life in the military so I am speaking ONLY from a college athletics and MMA point of view but as far as athletics is considered when I get off of creatine during the seasons I saw no drop in performance.
