US Marks Seventh 9/11 Anniversary...

CHAMPION, Pennsylvania — The seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks is supposed to bring the heated presidential race to a screeching halt. But just for a day.

Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama were appearing together twice Thursday and agreed to suspend all TV ads critical of each other in honor of the day terrorists forced four airplanes to crash into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon in Washington, killing nearly 3,000 people.

Neither candidate had any political events scheduled for the day. The 2001 attacks transformed the nation in many ways, and one is that every anniversary since has found those holding or seeking office struggling for ways to appropriately pay homage.

McCain was briefly speaking at a ceremony near the Shanksville crash site, alongside other dignitaries and relatives of the 40 passengers and crew who were killed there. Investigators believe passengers rushed the cockpit of United Airlines Flight 93 to thwart terrorists’ plans to use that plane as a weapon like the others.

In the afternoon, in New York, Obama and McCain were to visit ground zero together for a somber, silent wreath-laying in the pit that marks the largest loss of life in the attacks.

My wife and I both work in the education field. My 9/11 class to my students is always showing how we got to 9/11. It is then followed up by the movie 9/11. This is the movie filmed by the two French brothers, who just happened to be in the fire house filming a movie about the year in the life of a new firefighter. They were the ones who have the only images of plane #1 hitting the first tower.

My wife told me that in her middle school a teacher showed this film and all hell broke loose. That teacher is now fighting for his job. Evidently they think that the kids in school should not be seen any images from September 11th. You can talk about it, but you can't let them see it.

When was the last time you saw any images of the towers falling, or of the planes hitting the tower? Even more important, when was the last time you saw images of the people jumping off the tower to their deaths, instead of burning?

So I do my class and show my movie. If I do not, the whole idea of 9/11 will become ancient history, similiar to our reaction to Pearl Harbor.
