Bush urges Congress to lift offshore drilling ban

By H. JOSEF HEBERT, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - With gasoline topping $4 a gallon, President Bush urged Congress on Wednesday to lift its long-standing ban on offshore oil and gas drilling, saying the United States needs to increase its energy production. Democrats quickly rejected the idea.

My favorite part-

"Congressional Democrats were quick to reject the push for lifting the drilling moratorium, saying oil companies already have 68 million acres offshore waters under lease that are not being developed."

This is like saying that there are millions of acres in Kansas that aren't being taken advantage of by the logging industry.

As I said the other day in a post, as soon as "We the people" can convince Congress that they will be LESS electable if they don't drill, then they will drill.

I don't like paying the high prices for gas, but the one good thing that might come from it is the people get fed up and demand that Congress do what is right rather than what they think will get them re-elected. Just like earmarks!!!

History shows that most things government does to solve problems generally prove to do more harm than good. New drilling here on currently leased areas costs more than importing oil. New drilling on areas currently off limits, will cost less. Businesses do what's right or go out of business. Government does what it does and always grows. I prefer government does nothing in this matter.

We also need more refining capacity - I have heard the Dems have firmly resisted new construction due to environmental concerns.
