Al-Sadr forms elite wing to fight US forces

Moqtada al-Sadr, the virulently anti-American militia leader, announced yesterday that he was forming a new, exclusive wing of his al-Mahdi Army to fight US forces, and that most of his supporters would now concentrate on civilian works.

The cleric appeared to be trying to assert control over his sprawling, rag-tag army, accused of some of the worst death-squad atrocities in Iraq in recent years and which the Americans say has been partly coopted by Iranâ€™s Revolutionary Guards. â€œThe resistance will be carried out exclusively by a special group which I will announce later,â€

He just spent the past couple of months killing off his own special groups and now he wants to make more....oooooook.

The way I see it they will think that they are pretty bad ass. For the first couple of engagements US forces will be in as close to a "stand-up" fight as you can get over there. That'll kill off all the young fire pissers and leave a cadre of tough experienced fighters.

GOOD: On the one hand it will initially thin their ranks and demoralize the Al-Sadir "Mega-Force" (Why has that movie come up so much on the board lately?) for a short time. Not for long though, the people over there seem to be able to swallow their own hype pretty well.

BAD: It sucks that the nature of precission strikes seems to select towards better enemy soldiers surviving (fucking Darwin).
