Asthma Meds

Post by The Dove Killer »

I've read all of the info on asthma being a no-go for me, but I still have some questions if you guys could help me out. My asthma doesn't give me any problems as long as I take my once-a-day meds & it wouldn't hinder my physical abilities any.(allergy induced)

* Is it possible for MEPS to be able to find out about my asthma without me telling them?
* Would it be dishonorable if I didnt tell the truth about my asthma history?
* Is it possible to make it through boot camp & still take my meds daily? (without being found-out)

I really dont want to have to lie to get into the Army (kind of defeat being honorable), but I really want to serve my country and I know that if i dont give it a shot, I'll regret it for the rest of my life. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Problem!

Post by Iron Warrior »

Hello Doc!

I realize you dont want to be repetive and deal with the same thing over and over again..For that I apologize if I putting you on the spot.

I also know the Military has lowered their standards slightly recently. But I'am probably in the same position as this other guy, perhaps even a bit different!

I always wanted to be soldier since I was 4 years old,I'am strong both mentally and physically. I know I could make it if given the chance.

My problem is:

I went to recruiter last year, actually went to 2, both the Marines and the Army and neither would do anything about it once I told them I have a asthmatic condition that is not that serious. One said something about me having a heart attack or whatver.

I even asked them about a Waiver and taking a breathing- test, they wouldnt have anything to do with me.(My feeling was their where just lazy and didnt want to go out of their way, that was my impression atleast). They just said,good-bye and good luck" and that was the end of my try!

I was never hospitalized in my life for it,and its not even asthma.

So the recruiters around me werent any help at all!

I was checked out by a doctor not to long ago and my lungs are 100% healthy and so is my heart.I just have some rare air way disorder I got around the age of 11 or 12, after I came down with a bad virus/cold(bronchitis).Ever since on and off I would use the Asthma pump.

After reading how some of the guys around here had or have asthma or something similiar and they where/are in the army,it really piss's me off cause I dont know what the heck should I do?Is honestly the best policy?

My friend who was in the 82nd Airborn said I shouldnt tell them next time I go! This may be problem though for obvious reasons...

This may sound corny, but right now I feel like i'am rotting away or crawling along an edge of razor, cause I have not obtained my dream.

Any good advice or help would be appreciated!

Whoa! Hold on for a minute. Reread the stickies on asthma. Then, do some online research. Then, find a recruiter who will talk honestly with you about it. Finally, go to the Recruitment Process forum and post your question to Hit_It and ask him what the waiver process is like and if it's a possibility. Drive on to the objective! If this is what you want, pursue it!

Iron Warrior, you have just arrived on this site. Read all the "sticky's" above, then follow Doc's advice he gave to DK, don't argue do it! And Iron Warrior - your topic - "Problem" is not a topic. In the future you will state what you are asking. As in "Asthma Problem I have". I shall get another FAQ for you to read:

IronWarrior, ya need to follow Ranger Steafast's advice. I do sympathize with you though, so I'll try and help you out.

What EXACTLY does the doctor say you have?

What situations cause you to need to use an inhaler?

How often do you use it?

Would you be a hazard to your squad with this condition?

Here's my own experience with sports-induced asthma.

Growing up, I would always get out of breath running and whatnot...just figured that's how shit was. I played football and did all the regular shit kids used to do.

Sometimes I'd have fairly bad asthma attacks but didn't realize what they were. I took a hit off a buddy's asthma puffer once and that cleared my shit right up. But I still didn't know what I had.

FFWD....joined the army, went through everything....been in the army about 2 1/2 years....one morning I am running with my squad at Batt....there's fucking ice on the ground......I can't breath but I finish the run....afterwards I got to the medics....Army medics seem to be either REALLY good or REALLY bad.....I got the bad one.....

Me: Doc, I can't breath......

Doc: You are talking, you are breathing....

Me: (wheezing)....no dickhead, I'm having a REALLY hard time breathing.....

Doc: Lemme see.......you are fine

Me: Dude, did you not hear my frickin lungs weezing?

Doc: Yeah, you are fine, it's prolly just from the cold.......

So later I went to a real doctor and she said that I had sports-induced asthma.....so I carried a puffer in my web gear, and I would sometimes take a puff before PT. I didn't advertise the shit.

In my case, I used a puffer once, maybe twice in the field......I have found that even though it sucks, and is uncomfortable, that you CAN drive on through an asthma attack without meds.....as a matter of fact, I am doing so right this moment after my morning hike.....just takes a lot of coughing....

I have found that the better shape I am in, the less times I get SIA........asthma is also affected by other shit like allergies and whatnot....

Answer my questions up top and we will go from there.

Ranger SteadFast! Understood!

Bad Muther,I will answer the best i can :

1)What EXACTLY does the doctor say you have?

I went to Asthma Specialist(s) they said I dont have Asthma, but something similiar,my symptoms often simulate those of asthma or sports induced asthma .Its some kind of bronchial Airway disorder.I forgot the exact name since its been over 6 years since I went to them(Have to find out again sorry).

2)What situations cause you to need to use an inhaler?

Usually just the cold weather and allergies, but also when I run for long periods. But I workout with weights on a regular basis and it doent bother me.I also do alot of deep breathing exercises.

3)How often do you use it?

not very often. In fact I been clean for around 6 months, been keeping off it .

4)Would you be a hazard to your squad with this condition?

I would not think so,no !

but I would much rather be cleared before I enter the army, wouldnt want to be a liability in any way.But it was hard for me to talk to the recruiters, they just wouldnt listen once I brought up my medical problem.

Thanks Stead!

Ironwarrior....

Sounds like sport-induced to me...But I ain't a doc.

This is strictly my opinion, and others are sure disagree, but here goes...

Sounds like your symptoms are similiar to mine...you have to weigh the options....

1. Tell the recruiters and not get in the military (you already have some experience)

2. If you are POSITIVE that you can make it through basic, ait and possibly even BAC and RIP without an inhaler, I would not mention it to anyone and enlist.

That's my advice.

This thread has a lot of good information, but I have a question concerning one of the options. If you did know for sure that your asthma wouldn't be a problem and wouldn't put anyone in danger and decided not to disclose, what are the chances that they will find out during your secret security clearance? That seems like a pretty big risk.
