Go with the G-shock. I like mine alot. Simple, rugged and not very expensive.

If you want this to be a keepsake, i.e. the engraving, then you might not want to consider a tactical watch in the first place. I wore a g-shock exclusively during my entire time in the military. I went through 3 of them, primarily because straps would break and I'd lose the watch. I never once had the alarm go off at an inappropriate time, and I beat the crap out of them on a daily basis.

I bought expensive watches at one time. Haven't done that in 15 years now, because I continually break and loose them. Instead of spending $90-$300 (and since you want a good one I will assume the higher end) I suggest getting a cheap one like the forester ($30) http://www.watchesgiant.com/caftfowa2.html and a nice one for display like Tater Nuts suggests. The reason I say the forester is because I have one and it has taken much abuse and it still runs like a mofo. It doesn't have an alarm (I never needed one) and the dial is not luminescent but readable in the moon light (the light is useable in a pinch as a flashlight). As a mater of fact, I have had this one for almost a year now, even though it looks about 10 years old. The one thing that I wish it had was a dive ring. It boils down to preference though.

I like the Timex Ironman series. Cheap and pretty durable.

And I totally agree with my peers. You don't want to get him a nice, engraved watch for him to take to the field. It'll either get lost or fucked up.

I was in Panama in '88 and lost my watch in Colon Bay. I was going to Ranger when I got back and had to have a new watch. The night I got back I bought a G-Shock and have been wearing one ever since. I've gone through a couple in 18yrs but I wouldn't recommend anything else.

I wear a Chase Durer, about $180.00. All black, replaced the original watchband with one from a company called "The Band." It's just a velcro strap but that fucker ain't going nowhere.

Two years now, black steel, no light, no alarm, just dials, rotating bezel/date, stop watch/hr. min. /tenth sec. It has tritium, but it's not bright enough to give you away, just enough to hold it up to your face and read the numbers. All in all, a good buy.

had a G-shock that lasted 5 years then got ripped off my arm, second one lasted 5 years, and lost in a move. third is solar powered and gets daily updates from the atomic clock in CO, so long as it's within 2500 miles. saw one the other day at COSTCO for $30.

and I have my brother's $1200 Heuer for dress up days...

My Dad bought me a nice watch for my HS graduation. Thankfully I was wearing it to give the cop that pulled me over in exchange for letting me go. I just wish I had more of them because I was definitely in need as I grow older. I found my G-shock when I was a black hat on Friar Drop Zone. The band broke on Joe. That was in 91 and I still have it. I bought a Timex something Man last year in Iraq.

Go with the G Shock and give him the difference in cash for the cops.
