Introduction

Post by marundel »

My name is Chris, USAF 24 years, currently assigned to RE staff in the building. From '86 to '91, I was assigned to the 317th Tac Airlift Wing out of Pope/Ft. Bragg. I was the nav on chalk 10 over Rio Hato in Dec '89 w/follow-on out of Howard. I joined the forum in the hopes that some of the guys I was responsible for putting on the ground there might have some photos they'd be willing to share. I'm set to retire in Sep '07, and hoping to finally have the time to pull my scrapbooks together. Any help is greatly appreciated. --Chris

Apologies - reintroduction

Post by marundel »

My apologies to the Rangers on the site - I posted my name and purpose prior to reading the FAQ.

Active duty USAF: Entered service via ROTC in 1982. Graduated flight school 1983. Served with 37th Tactical Airlift Squadron (TAS), Rhein Main, Germany 1984-1986. 41st TAS, Pope AFB, NC 1986-1988. 317th Tac Alft Wing, Pope AFB, NC 1988-1991. HQ MAC, Scott AFB, IL 1991-1992. 96th TAS, Minneapolis (Reserve) 1993-1994. HQ AFRES, Robins AFB, GA 1994-1996. Advanced Airlift Tactics Training School instructor, St. Joseph, MO 1996-2002. 21st Air Force, McGuire AFB, NJ 2002-2004. HQ USAF, Pentagon, 2004 to present.

Op Just Cause - Rio Hato assault w/follow-on at Howard
Ops Desert Shield and Storm - 1610th Ailift Division (provisional), Riyadh
Op Provide Promise (1994) - 38th TAS (provisional), Rhein Main
Op Deep Freeze (Antarctica, 1999/2000 and 2001)
Op Enduring Freedom, Horn of Africa (2005/2006)

As stated on my original post, I was the nav on chalk 10 over Rio Hato. My aircraft took 21 rounds and had one casualty - a wounded Ranger. He took a round through the side of the aircraft, into his shoulder, and lodged in his spine. We offloaded him alive at Howard. Although I was over the airfield, and although I returned Christmas Eve to fly support for the push in-country, I never got a single photograph. I also never learned the name of the wounded Ranger we carried. I'm hoping to remedy both situations.

I recently returned from teh Horn of Africa (Camp Lemonier, Djibouti) where I had the privilege of serving in the JSOTF with four officers who proudly wore their Ranger tabs. One of them (Maj Clark)suggested that I look for information on this forum. Thanks again for any help you can give me. --Chris
