Just wondering SFC hit_it why do you not approve them? I know the RE-3 is kinda weird, and RE-4 is just a plain NO.hit_it wrote:any RE-code of less than RE-1 will require a waiver to reenter the military.
since you obviously recieved a college drop, i don't see a problem.
I. however, don't approve them damn things.

the losing service give the RE code based on charcter or service and type of discharge.
the gaining service must look at the same and determine if they would have given the same code for that same type of discharge. if the like what they see, then they approve.
some services (SQUIDS) give unusual RE codes for certain disharges (RE-4 for almost everything). The Army realized this and now reviews Navy RE-4 on a case by case basis. then the same rule applies. if it would have been an RE-3 by Army standards, a waiver is obtained. I happen to know a guy really really really well who when he went to get out was discovered in his ETS physical was a broke dick motherfucker. He was extended for a medical board and found to be 30% disabled. He was informed he could either take that disability in the form of a monthly check or get a cash payment based off your base pay times 2, times the number of yrs on AD. He chose the latter and got 48k upon separation. After he got his rating, then he went thru the process of doing all the paperwork of getting his final DD-214. He is not sure why but he wound up with an RE-1. So a few yrs after being out he decides to go back in. He then finds out from his recruiter that even with his RE-1 he still needs waivers and if does get back in he will have to pay back all the money he received when he got out........................So a little bird tells him "hey dude, go GUARD." It is state money not federal so you can keep your cash and fuck the system, plus you don't need no stinking waivers. The moral of the story is that you can get what you want in the Guard because they offer full time jobs and are hurting big time for bodies

To follow up on what Ranger RRDTm3 was talking about, the soldier would have to go to MEPS and still get medically cleared and it would also depend on the narrative of his separation on his DD-214. As far as the money issues, he would have to speak with a recruiter about that.
As far as transfer to Active Duty and promotions it is really almost a case by case basis. For instance, if that soldier wants to go to active duty, he's got to get his company commander to release him. Some are real assholes and wont' do it. Or his unit could be under a stop loss, which most likely is the case for LA as they have an Enhanced Brigade that probably is slated for mobilization. This is the same shit that happens for the Reserve.
If a soldier wants to go from Active to the Reserve/Guard, there must be a compatible slot/rank for that soldier. It is possible for them to be double slotted but again, it really is a case by case basis. It also depends on how far he's willing to travel. Most Guard/Reserve NCO/Officers I know have waived the 50 mile driving limit so they can get promoted.
