Avonte, excellent news. You've aligned yourself on a path many will walk on but few will succeed. Leverage this site as a resource and as Ranger Jim would always say... Never, Never quit.

Dear Rangers,

I have 31 days before I leave for Fort Benning, for some reason I previously said that I ship July 15th and I have no clue because my actual ship date is July 9th. Physically I know I have a lot of work to do.

I am working very strenuously on getting myself in the best shape I possibly can be in and after seeing how much farther ahead a lot of other people are. I know that means not only do I need to catch up, but I need to surpass the minimal requirements by a significant amount. I do know that anyone who aims for the minimum is aiming for failure.

I have spent the past 7 months working extremely hard in order just to be able to go into the Army. I’m not sure if this really means anything or not, but I live with just my mother and we live below the federal poverty standards. I obviously needed a job if I wanted to have a house to sleep in, so 7 days a week, I was either going to school or going to work or both in the same day.

All while attempting to graduate high school or the Army would remove me from the DEP program. I spent almost every single waking hour worrying about if A) I was going to have a place to sleep, and B) If I was going to be able to go to the Army at all. Well when I did graduate I realized two things “I somehow pulled my grades out of the depths of hell and can finally focus 100% on my career in the Army” and “I’m a complete idiot I’m not physically prepared at all”.

The biggest thing I have been working on is my running. When I first started 2 months ago I couldn’t even run half a mile. 2 days ago I ran 4 miles. While I do realize that I completely messed up by slacking on my physical fitness, I do realize that the only thing I can do from here on out, is accept the fact that I wasted time and work so much harder to get where I need to be.

One thing I do have going for me is that living in a lower class/ poverty violent neighborhood area I live around a lot of people who give up and have nothing going for them. Seeing it in person reminds me that I do not ever want to end up like them and refuse to end up in the same situation. My apologies for the extremely long update

Keep working hard and you'll end up where you want to be. There is a lot to learn here and absorb if you're willing to put in the time. Don't worry about being a super PT stud at this point- OSUT will help get you into shape. No matter what, don't quit.

Ranger Inteltoad is 100% correct so I will just echo those comments. Many of the people that come to this site are many times over more prepared compared to the majority of OPT 40's. First, you are looking for information and preparing yourself mentally months in advance. Second, you know and want to be in better shape before you even get to Basic. Those are two huge steps in the right direction. Many of us Ranger's on here got none of that and were just fine. Do the best you can to prep yourself in your final month. I hope you are leveraging the Mentoring Zone for yourself since it sounds like you have a bit more time.

You focused on what you needed to. Life, and military life, is all about priorities. Fitness was definitely not a priority for you at the time. Nothing wrong with that. Sounds like you have a lot to deal with. Is your mother going to be ok while you are gone for months? Does she need to live with you once you get to your first duty station?

Thank you Ranger Disinfertention, My Mother will be fine and since I’m only 17 years old and won’t turn 18 until August she will have access to my bank account in order to help pay some of the bills throughout Basic Training,

My financial responsibilities were to pay a couple smaller bills and spend my own money on food when we didn’t have the food stamp card in order to save her some money from spending on me eating. But she has assured me that she can handle everything from here. Thank you for your concerns.

Good to know. I'm not very well read on what the military can do if she does need help and you are away. Just if the time comes and you are in training away from home bring it up early. Don't let stuff get out of control if you can prevent it.

When is the last time you gave yourself an APFT? Think about doing one so you can measure your progress over this next month or so.

Ranger Disinfertention I just took the push up and sit up version

Sit: ups I got 45
And for pushups I got a whopping 20 in before my arms kind of just gave up on me. And my last 2 mile run was on Tuesday in which I ran it in 17:40

Good deal, Avonte. Keep working on improving those numbers to give yourself a decent baseline! Let us know if you have any questions.

Roger Ranger Disinfertention, today I did a PFT on my Sit-ups which have increased to 51

And I also ran a 36:33 4 mile run, which means I need to add in extra mile in there in roughly the same amount of time which is very very possible

Pushups is still an issue, I can do push-up ladders and normal sets just fine perfect form basically my entire chest hitting the ground and locking my arms at the top. But for some reason I can’t seem to be able to do all at once if that makes any sense. Nevertheless I still do 100-200 a day just doing ladders and sets of 10 frequently because I know they will improve.

Just keep at it. It's not just work that does it for most of us.. it is being consistent. So to get good at any of these things is to do them over time and do more of them. Never be comfortable. Never settle! And to quote Ranger Jim - Never, Never quit.
