Correct me if I'm wrong but there is no current way possible to be a current 3 time awardee, right? Service periods would have to include (going backwards from most recent to older) GWOT, Desert Storm/ Somalia/ Cold War/ Panama/Grenada, and Vietnam or other previous wars?

Either way, that is a hell of a combat record to be proud of.

I remember seeing the CIB section at the old Infantry Museum at Ft Benning. Memory is fuzzy, but it was in a stairwell, and as you climbed up to the second floor, it discussed 2nd award CIB criteria and on the third floor was 3rd award criteria and a list of recipients.

Of course that all could have been on the same floor and my memory is wrong. It's been close to 20 years since I went there. And it has moved locations too.

I wanted to mention that many years ago I had the honor and good fortune to meet and serve with LTC Glenn W. Metcalf when he was Senior Advisor to 4th Vietnamese Ranger Group. He served in the invasion of Normandy as a member of 5th Ranger Battalion, He was XO of the 8th Army Ranger Company in Korea and as a Ranger Advisor in Viet-Nam. To the best of my knowledge, he is the only man who earned a CIB with 2 stars for service with Rangers. RLTW!

My platoon sergeant had a CIB with a star. His first was earned during Desert Storm, the second in OIF circa 2005-2006. He was one of only a handful of guys that had a double that I encountered, although I'm sure there were several (hundreds) of senior NCO and officers that earned a second.

Semi related, I spent about 45 minutes one night talking to a light bird colonel about how he earned a 2nd Infantry combat patch. I started by asking if he served with the Stryker unit that replaced us after the invasion. He replied that his was from the DMZ during the 70's when the Norks were acting up in support of their Vietnamese brothers. Wish I could remember his name.

ETA: I believe he told me he was a buck sergeant when he was awarded his shoulder insignia, but he didn't say what the circumstances were.

It boggles my mind how the Army uses mental gymnastics to define periods of war for the purposes of Combat awards like the CIB.

Maybe I'm just oversimplifying it, but each combat action should have the possibility of earning a CIB. In my life there has been Grenada, Panama, Desert Storm/Shield, Somalia, GWOT, and several smaller unpublicized wars.

I was serving in Viet-Nam in 1967, when we got a SP4 from the 82d Abn Div who had served in Grenada. His first comment to us was, "I'm looking forward to getting into contact so that I get a star for my CIB." One of the SGTs told him that he knew all about Grenada, so he (the SP4) was sent to Viet-Nam to verify that he had actually earned a CIB.
