Steve Intro

Post by batboy275 »

Greetings Rangers,

My name is Steve and I'm a prior Ranger from the eighties. I served in Charlie Co, 2/75, from March 1984 to September 1986, when I then PCS'd to the Old Guard at Ft Myer. In total, I served 22 years Active, National Guard and Reserve, retiring in 2005 as a First Sergeant. I started Ranger School in Class 8-85 and finished in 9-85 (real Rangers recycle).

Right now I work in Law Enforcement, looking forward to retirement #2.

Take care and Be SAFE! RLTW!

The way I became a Ranger and have earned the small amount of success I have had in life has been mostly due to one quality - determination. Lefty.

All,

I got off active duty in December 1987, and began a career in Law Enforcement. I've been doing that since. I'm married with 2 children. One is a Social Worker (the leftie of the family lol) and the other is in his third year at West Point (I can't convince him to go Infantry, he wants to be a rotorhead). Other than that, just been living a good life, having fun and chilling out.

Several other long serving LEO on the site as well as a couple just starting their careers fresh out of Regiment.

I'm sure your advice and stories about both will be well received.

cams,

I think our Ranger pride in service is what also draws us to Law Enforcement. My advice to my fellow Rangers who would like to become LEO's is this....RELAX...Take a step back at first.....use your VA Benefits and go to college. If you go to college, DO NOT get a degree in Admin of Justice. Get one in Business or Language or Engineering or Emergency Management. If hired by an agency, you will learn what you need to know at the Police Academy and in field training. (we don't give ROTC Rangers a tab, and we don't call you a cop because you have a degree).
Most important, take some time off between active-duty and applying for a police job. Most agencies make you take a psychological evaluation, and you need some down time before you take that. Other than that....good luck. I've been a cop for 28 years now and have enjoyed most of it. I've worked the jail, warrant squad, patrol, school resource officer and now patrol watch commander. Stick with it, just like Ranger School, and you'll be okay.

On a lighter note, when I signed up for the site, I needed a screen name. Just so you know, batboy didn't derive from "battalion" boy, as we are sometimes known at Ranger School. After RIP, I was assigned to Charlie Weapons, Anti-Tank Section. Within the first couple of weeks, my gun team leader (Mango) got ahold of my ID Card. He turned it upside down, told everyone in the Platoon that I looked like a bat, and thus got my nickname.

Stay Safe RLTW

Excellent advice already brother. Stick around and we'll get you processed as soon as we can and into the back room (less grooming standards of you know what I mean).

Was your Sgt 'Mango' or 'Mingo'? We have a member here that goes by Mingo Kane.

Anyway, welcome again. Good to have you join.

cams,

It was Mango, or Menghis Khan behind his back! It looks like he retired off Active Duty as a CSM.
