U.S. Army Ranger Killed During Training

Post by centermass »

FORT STEWART, GA. (USASOC News Service, August 26, 2016)--A U.S. Army Ranger died as the result of injuries sustained during an airborne proficiency jump August 24 at Galahad Drop Zone.

Staff Sgt. Avonye John Cavon Chisolm, 26, sustained serious injuries during the airborne operation; he was transported to the nearest military treatment facility; then air-lifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center, Savannah, Georgia. He died August 25.

The incident is under investigation.

Chisolm was assigned to Company E, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga., as a Culinary Specialist Non-Commissioned Officer.

"Staff Sgt. Avonye Chisolm represented the best of our Ranger leaders. He had an impact on every Ranger in this Battalion through his tireless work ethic, positive attitude and contagious smile," said Lt. Col. Robert S. Brown, Commander of the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. "He made us feel like we could shoulder more than our fair share of the task, because he always led from the front. His loss will be felt across the organization and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time."

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Chisolm deployed five times in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Godspeed Ranger.

RIP Ranger.

It seems there is an issue with the current parachutist items, based solely on the amount of deaths in the last few years. I hope it gets sorted out with out any more deaths. In this case, I wonder what caused the total malfunction- bad rigging, bad packing, a ruptured static line, or shit luck with a bunch of minor things compounding into a large thing? It seems SF just had a freefall casualty recently as well from improper rigging.

Ref: Ranger Chisolm's arrangements, courtesy CSM Jeff Mellinger:
"Please pass along, and be there if you are able with a piece of Ranger gear, beret, pin, etc.

There will be a wake service at Bethany Baptist Church (Charleston, SC) from 1800-2000 on Tuesday 30 August. The funeral will start at noon on Wednesday 31 August also at Bethany Baptist. There will be food served by the church congregation immediately following and from there everyone will go to Sunset Memorial Gardens cemetery for the burial.

And one more for the Big Ranger in the Sky."

The way I became a Ranger and have earned the small amount of success I have had in life has been mostly due to one quality - determination. Lefty.
