A friend of mine put it very eloquently...
They put the vermin in a condemned building, while the line gets multimillion dollar facilities.

Mortars are the bastard children of the infantry. I was kind of going to let you figure that one out on your own.

Rangers, I have a question, what are some of the things you do to help improve your overall land nav (especially night land nav) skills and is there anyway I can practice it on my own?

Did you recycle for land nav? No biggie if you did. I failed a key land nav test early as a cadet, and it was the motivator I needed to really become proficient.

Get yourself a map of an easily 'readable' area of post. Plot some points (distance and direction) and move to them. Even if the point is pitifully obvious (a jump tower, or a building), still do it. Get to know your pacecount. Get familiar with your route (at 1/3 way I'll be crossing a road, at 1/2 I'll see a building, at 2/3 I'll cross a creek, etc.). Get some of that confidence that only experience can bring.

If you have an older map (most are) look at it and look around you. See if buildings or landmarks have changed and understand why. Maybe there's a new road that's not reflected. Maybe an old road is gone (very common in the backcountry). Maybe there is a stream where none existed before (rainfall), maybe there is no stream where one is shown (drought).

Land nav confidence comes out of practice, errors, fixing errors, and comfort. You need to look at a map, then look around you, and 'see' the three dimentional reality reflected on the two dimentional document. Practice while driving to a location (don't use GPS). Practice all the time.

You need to get to the point where you are confident in where you are going, while still comfortable knowing that things change and you can't always trust the map. When you get good, you'll be able to pick a key landmark near where you are going as an 'anchor.' This can be a fallback if you get lost, or you can move directly to it and orient to your point/location from there.

Remember, land nav tests aren't tactical movements. You can do whatever method to get to your point as needed. The quickest way to a point is not always a straight line distance. In fact, that is seldom the case. Existing paths from previous land nav'ers can screw you up more than they can help.

Finally, and I have no idea if this is possible in RASP hold (or wherever you are), you can ask an NCO for help. Maybe they will, maybe not.

Ranger PocketKings, thank you for the advice, and negative, land nav was not the reason why I was recycled.
