Role of E-4's in the Regiment.

Rangers, so I'm a DEP who leaves in August, and I have a four year degree so as you know ill be going in as an E4. I would like to know the roles I will play as a new E4. What kind of responsibilities will I have once I am in. I was told by someone who got out in 2005 that your pretty much treated as a private until you prove yourself, and then get pushed into leadership positions faster. I don't necessarily care about being in charge but I'm just wondering. He got almost 10 years ago so I was just seeing if it was any different. Thank you Rangers.

I went through RIP with a Logistics cat that was an E7. When he got to BN he had to push for "Tab Checks" and when we rode trucks it was "No Tab hit the slab." he was sitting on the floor of the 5-Ton with the Privates. Which is as it should be.

Had a guy in my platoon had a college degree came in as an E4. He felt his degree in literature (paid for by his family) somehow prepared and made him more deserving of leadership opportunities and respect. It didn't. Dude was a shit head. Don't be that guy.

Step 2- Worry about what E-4's do in Regiment

In this case, E-4 is just a pay grade! You will have to earn your place just like an E-0. If I were you, I would give 110% at all times and associate only with those who do the same. NEVER QUIT!

You are what we call a PV4. Everything you have seen here is the case. You are a private who makes a little more money. You are treated the same as all privates and generally you still go to parade rest and address a tabbed E-4 as "Specialist" even though you are a Specialist yourself. The difference of a Tab makes it an entirely different rank. As a Tabbed Spec-4, you are training to become an NCO, and are very close to it.

Shit! There were a handful of Tabbed PFCs I had to stand at parade rest for and address by their rank. (now that RASP is longer, dunno if that is still possible..)

When I got to RTB, my doing that freaked out all the lower enlisted, because none had been to the Regiment. If someone was in Batt. longer than you, they were considered to "outrank" you, and thus it was expected for even non-Tabbed soldiers.
