Introduction - Chandler

Post by Vantage »

Hello Rangers,

My name is Chandler, i'm 17, and am a senior in high school in Upstate New York. First off, I want to thank all of you Rangers for your service and the plethora of information on this site. It truly is awesome.

I'm here because I plan on signing an 11x Option 40 contract as soon as possible. I took the ASVAB last week, and scored an 88; I have filled out all necessary paper work as well (minus what I will do at MEPS). My recruiter told me he doesn't see any Option 40's available online, however, he is fairly positive he can call MEPS and get one for me. To do this though, he needs my parents to sign off (not sure if this is true but if I get 11x Option 40 it doesn't matter). However, my Mom is hesitant and thinks I need a college education before I make any big decisions (I think she is starting to come around though); but I turn 18 in less than a month anyway. So right now it's just a waiting game- either my Mom signs or I turn 18.

I am also currently applying to West Point. My plan is to DEP with an 11x Option 40, and also apply to West Point (this is kind of a compromise with my parents). I'm currently waiting to hear back from my congressman for a nomination.

Thank you for all the information, I will make sure to post an update when I sign my contract.

Ranger Jim,

Here are my PT results:

Push Ups: 55
Sit-Ups: 82
2 Mile Run: I ran two miles around my school's track and when I went to check my phone's timer it was shutoff because of the cold (was 11 degrees with wind chill factor, and there was an inch of ice/snow on the track. At least now I know to bring a timer not a phone). However, I was timed for a 1-mile run two weeks ago by my gym teacher for a CFA test for West Point and scored:
1 Mile run: 5:27
Pull Ups: 11

Push-ups were definitely a reality check. Since soccer season just ended a couple weeks ago it's been taking me a while to regain strength. However, now I know what I need to work on. I will continue my workouts everyday and post another PT test with an actual 2 mile time within two weeks (unless you would like me to sooner Ranger Jim), and will start memorizing the Ranger Creed.

Suspense adjusted. I grew up in the Seven Mountains region of Central Pennsylvania. This can be a very cold time of the year. Never, never quit!

Yes it can! I love the cold though. It'll make PT tests a bit more challenging as the snow adds up, but I'd prefer not running on a treadmill.

Ranger Jim,

Next step is to secure a 11x Option 40 contract. I turn 18 in exactly three weeks, so that may be the soonest I can.

Ranger Jim,

Yes I have. I've actually already filled out all the paperwork necessary to go to MEPS, and have taken the ASVAB (scored an 88 AFQT). Right now my recruiter is just waiting until my Mom signs or I turn 18. He is fairly confident he can call in and get me a 11x Option 40, he just needs me there to sign and reserve it.

The advantage of being in the DEP is that your pay is based on you date of enlistment. Time in the DEP counts for pay purposes.
