Optics

Post by adckse »

Hey boys,
I need input on optics for an AR15 build I just finished. Chambered in 5.56, 16" barrel.... Aimpoint, EOTech, Leupold M4CQ/T or whatever. Waaaayyyyy back in the day we used ACOG's. I all I need are your preferences and any logic that comes with it. Especially if you are currently using a system. Thanks!

I currently have a EOTech, that I bought second hand for $275. If money was not an issue I would go with an ACOG just because it doesn't use batteries. If money is an issue I wouldn't discount some of the cheaper scopes like Vortex scopes. There are newer and more affordable scopes coming out all the time.

There are probably 2-3 threads around this in the Weapons of War forum.

I have an EOTech 512. I got the AA version, as those camera batteries can get pricey quick. At the time I couldn't find any second hand that were significantly less than new. I haven't used any Aimpoints or ACOGs, so I can't speak to those. I like the way the EOTech handles co-witness. If you do go that route, I highly recommend the Accucam from GG&G.

You had me worried the way you phrased that "ACOG, back in the day" statement. It made me feel old or out of touch.

I have said it before, but I have the .Trijicon ACOG - TA31RCO-M4CP

Don't let the listed price scare you. They can be picked up new or used in good condition for a lot less.

Bonus. You already know how to use the crusty, ole ACOG.

I used the Leupold CQT for many years and loved it. You go from 0-2.9 magnification with a slight twist and no loss of zero ( think of a M68 and an ACOG in one piece). Some shooters I have worked with complained that it 'losses it's zero/shifts quite frequently" but I never had a problem with it. Hope that helps!

My preference would be for an Acog, I think its the TA31 model with the red chevron. I had one on my service M4 for 2 deployments, and the training in between the rotations. No batteries, can be used with both eyes open, 4x mag, built in elevation reticle, and no need for the doc optic or any other red dot on top to shoot close in.
Unfortunately, my personal m4 couldn't afford an Acog, so I settled for a Millet dms-1 or something like that. Think of it as a 1-4x cqb/ mid range optic. Maybe some day I'll be able to afford an Acog though.

Depending on what you may be using your AR for, Nikon has the 1 x4 tube scope.

Quick follow up; two were posted today on AR15.com Equipment Exchange, under optics. The one Trijicon I mentioned used for $875 and a TA01NSN (only mounted) for about the same.

Just found this one this morning. Looks pretty sweet.

Curious as to how she works/quality wise.

Nice- never saw that before. Kinda like the Elcan Specter DR. Only less money.

A little heavy though (as it appears most "flips"are). It says weight is about 30 ounces which is probably right since the Elcan weighs about 1.5 pounds. In contrast the Trijicon ACOG weighs about 9.9 ounces.

Here's a question since it was mentioned earlier- why do people put an extra red dot on top or at an angle on their Acog? I thought the whole purpose of the Bindon Aiming Concept was to be able to engage near and far with both eyes open off of one optic? It seems to me that having to break my cheek weld to sight in on another optic would take too long and be unstable, not to mention any zeroing issues from having the sight at odd angles. Speaking from personal experience, the only way I couldn't accurately engage at either distance was if I was using my Nods to look through the Acog, but then that was what our IR lasers were for anyway.

x2 on that question.

Trijicon even specifically makes the ACOG/RMR combo which somewhat defies the BAC theory. The only comment I ever heard was some guys prefer the red dot for purely CQB situations. I can't personally speak with any experience on that. But it would probably screw with my aiming mechanics because I am a mule when it comes to change.
