Credit card debt

Post by Astinos »

Rangers,

I am working with my recruiter right now to get my 11x Option 40 contract and I am worried about one aspect, I have heard that security clearances can be turned down if you have too much debt. Right now I have about $5,100 in credit card debt and about $1,000 in medical bills that I am paying off. I make all of my payments on time every month and have never missed a payment. Does anyone know or have an idea if I will have a hard time getting my clearance or if I will get one at all?

Thanks,

CDT Scott

So long as your credit rating is good & you are not carrying debt inordinate to your income.
The concern is that you might sell what you have available, IE: secrets or lethal hardware, to pay off debt or to live beyond your means.

If you are and have been current on payments, you should have no problem. If you have not, check your credit score and get a copy of your credit report.

Thank you Ranger K.Ingraham and Ranger Bill

I am ordering a credit report to make sure I will not hit any snags on the way.

Rangers,

Much to my displeasure, I ordered my credit report/score, my report shows me up to date on all payments and never missing any. But my credit score is rated as poor at "610" because of my high balances. I really hope this will be okay when it comes to my security clearance.

Of course my student loans can't possibly be helping me any.

The folks who adjudicate clearances don't blindly follow formulas, like bankers do.
They know students have loans, that's one of the reasons you all enlist!
High balances go with your age, it's revolving credit and multi-cards that start sending up the red flags.
You're probably just fine.

Thanks Ranger K.Ingraham,

You've put my mind at ease.

Only thing left to do is PT everyday. Spending mass time at the gym.

And when you are on active duty, ensure that your accounts are kept up to date and you are not late with payments. A good credit report is truly worth its weight in gold.

Frankly, I've seen more troops get into trouble for debt than I'd care to believe...

You are absolutely correct.
