Introduction - Nick

Post by NickL84 »

Hello Rangers, my name is Nick, I am 24 years old, and for as long as I can remember it has always been a dream to become a Ranger. I'm 6'2 200lbs and have been althetic all of my life due to hockey/football/baseball/etc, and recently I score a 285 on my preliminary APFT. I've been a technician on cars between mechanical/autobody for the last 10 years but it has never been fullfilling enough for me and always left me wondering when is the challenge going to come. Thankfully I find on April 1st, when I ship to Ft. Benning, GA.

With that being said I went in to MEPS 1 month ago with my heart set on an 11x Option 40 contract and was dq'd for red/green color discriminate and 20/25 vision. I had them retest my color vision and that checked out to be perfect, however my vision is correct I do not have 20/20 in at least one eye to allow for the contract for Airborne. I ended up signing an 11x contract with the hopes that my persistance/APFT Score/and the I WILL NOT quit, will help me obtain Airborne/RIP once I am in and prove myself.

Thank you in advance to everyone that replies, and I look forward to hearing from you all.

Ranger Baseplate,

That is the question I raised to the MEPS doctors, and what I was told is that you need at least 20/20 correctable in one eye to have an Option 40 contract. Mind you I have 5 different eye doctors paperwork telling them otherwise, yet they did not accept it. I read in the Army Fitness Standards booklet/document that one eye needs to be correctable to 20/20 for you to have Airborne in your contract. However I was told by several Rangers that once your in, your held to a different standard and as long as my PT is perfect or within a few points off aswell as I stand out for all the right reasons, that I would most likely be able to volunteer/possibly be approached by a Ranger Liason about going that route.

I do understand that while my seat is not garaunteed, I am a good candidate it just comes down to me proving my abilities. I told them to sign me up for however many years they want with as little of a bonus as they want because it does not matter to me and the counselor flat out said "no it's protocal and once you get down there they will say what the F". I had to get a waiver for just 11x due to my vision being 20/25 on the Army's eye test, not several civilian ones that showed 20/20 uncorrected.

Thank You Again!

Nick
