Russia, Georgia agree to cease-fire outline

Post by Chiron »

TBILISI, Georgia - Declaring "the aggressor has been punished," the Kremlin ordered a halt Tuesday to Russia's devastating assault on Georgia — five days of air and ground attacks that left homes in smoldering ruins and uprooted 100,000 people.

Both sides accepted the general outlines of a cease-fire plan, but Georgia complained hours after the Russian endorsement that bombs and shells were still falling.

Georgia President Mikhail Saakashvili said Russia's aim all along was not to gain control of two disputed provinces but to "destroy" the smaller nation, a former Soviet state and current U.S. ally.

Russia's behavior doesn't surprise me at all, after WW2 ended they continued to loot, rape and murder German citizens. Concern from the Allies was replied to with "screw you" from the Russian government at the time. Their 5th grade mentality today is no different.
News from this side.

Greek TV on the ground in Georgia is reporting that there are Georgian militants or “insurgentsâ€

The Russian invasion of Georgia sounds eerily familiar to the tragic Hungarian revolution of 1956. Many on this site are too young to have memories of that event, but as a sixth grader at the time, I still remember the newsreels and news articles. In October 1956 a spontaneous demonstration by students and others led to a confrontation at the government radio station in Budapest. Secret police in the building opened fire on the crowd, killing many, and the entire country rose up against the communist government. When the Hungarian army was sent to quell the revolt, the Army went over to the side of the people. A provisional governmrnt under Imre Nagy was set up and the Hungarians enjoyed a week of freedom. Under Krushchev, the Soviets used the time to assemble a large army of "reliable" troops, invited Nagy and Pal Maleter, Minister of Defence, to a "peace conference" where both men were arrested and executed, then smashed into Hungary and Budapest, gunning down men, women, and children in a crushing reassertion of control.
Because the Hungarians revolted at the same time that Britain, France, and Israel blitzed Egypt to seize the Suez Canal (catching the US completely off guard), it is believed Krushchev wanted to make such an example of Hungary that the West would not dare intervene, which, of course, is exactly what happened.

I will not be surprised if the Russians allow a brief period of cease-fire or "peace", then totally crush the Georgian people and government in a bid to re-establish Russian hegemony over the former states of the Soviet Union. The Ukraine may be next.
