Err, 61W is an officer MOS. He wouldn't be eligible for that school; he'd have to have his MD first. Are you thinking of the Special Operations Combat Medic course in Fort Bragg, North Carolina? It's abbreviated SOCM and graduates are awarded the W1 identifier.

In that case, the course is a PCS en-route course for new soldiers, from what I understand. In other words:
Basic Training
68W AIT
SOCM
RIP
Permanent duty assignment
Clueless Joe(Sand hill): May 98 - May 99
Tabless Bitch (Bco 3/75): May 99 - May 01
REMF (11th Regt): May 01 - Feb 04
Leg Team/Squad leader (HHC 1-503, 2ID, OIF): Feb 04 - Dec 05

61W?

Your husband is a Vascular Surgeon?
:?

Don't worry, Medics by there nature are week minded and physically minimally capable of passing RIP. Add to that the fact that Ft. Sam Houston is actively undermining any progress he may have made in basic training towards becoming a soldier and you have a recipe for failure. He will soon be world wide and on his way to leg land.

The Special Operations Medic Course usually comes after someone graduates RIP. It's very long, very expensive, and there are portions of the training that are considered sensitive in nature, if not classified. They don't send someone until they are currently assigned to one of the Ranger Battalions or RHQ.

If you have a way to get a hold of your man, let him know that he needs to stay on his "A game". BustedKidney is completely accurate in his statement that any improvements gained by him will quickly wash away in a beer and cheeseburger soaked wave while at Ft. Sam. It may already be too late. The PT done while in medic AIT is weak, at best. He needs to go to the gym and work out on his own at every opportunity.
