Long Tab vs Short Tab in Regt.

Post by K.Ingraham »

Not long after the SF Tab came out in the late '80s, I remember hearing that SF qualified soldiers in the RR were told Ranger Tabs only, that they couldn't wear both.
What's the gen?
Thanks.

I remember the PAs wearing SF tabs with Ranger tabs, so I would say that is a rule that went the way of the Dodo

I was thinking AR 670-1 , back in the day, allowed you to only wear one qualification tab on the same uniform.

Correct.

Circa....1984 or so...only one tab was authorized for wear on the uniform at a time. Everyone who was authorized to wear either tab favored the gold and black. Everyone. The only guys that wore SF tabs were guys who had not been to the Suck.

I can still remember....CSM Dick Noble making us sew an SF tab on at least one set of BDU's. I think that I remember taking an official DA photo in dress greens with an SF tab, as well. Because I was in Group at the time, I had to wear that tab for the photo.

At some point, and I do not remember when it happened, both tabs were authorized for wear at the same time.

Long time ago.

Thanks for the memory jog, Rangers.
Pretty short lived rule.

Upon the establishment of the 18 series MOS, I was an 11B3V and wore the Black and Gold proudly while in Group as there was no “long tabâ€

As far as 2nd Batt. goes, from '86 to late '92 while I was there, NO SF tabs allowed.

Thanks all.
The regs often say one thing, but the practice & local policies are often another.

There were many ideas being thrown around about the tabs back in the mid-80s. There was even a "SPARTAN" tab idea to show you were both SF and Ranger. Eventually it coame down to what we see today, the tripple canopy: SF, Ranger then Airborne.
