A little PT inspiration

Post by jmil »

Rangers,

I haven't posted much in the year I've been reading these forums. I have always believed that when faced with an opportunity to learn something it's better to keep your mouth shut and listen.

However, the other day I read something in a magazine and instantly felt as though I should post it here to share with Rangers and fellow DEPS.

A guy named Brad Alsop decided to run a marathon on the 4th of July to raise money and show support for American Troops overseas. While a marathon is no small feat, running one does not necessarily make a person stand out to the general public. So rather than running just one he decided to run 26.2 miles every day from then until Veterans Day.

That is 26.2 miles every day for 131 days.

I searched around on google and came up with an article: http://www.wave3.com/Global/story.asp?S=7349671

Brand ran 55 marathons when temperatures were above 91 degrees; the mercury soared to 99 during 13 of his runs.

Brad raised over $18,000 for the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund, and now that all the marathons are complete, he hopes people will continue to donate.
"We was coming up the hill there," said Brad's friend, Bill Boettger. "And he was in so much pain, he finally come to a stop, and I thought he was going to vomit, that's how much pain he was in. And I said, 'man, let me call an ambulance.'"
I read this article and was in awe of Alsop's determination. A lot of running programs recommend going out every other day with a long run once a week. This guy ran a marathon every single day for 131 days simply because he felt the need to show support for American Troops.

I just wanted to put this out in the open, it is a great source of inspiration.

Rangers and DEPs,

Brad is a local guy. I saw him on a run once; he's pretty intense. When he started running the 26.2 he'd do it at the same time everyday. A couple people would watch and give encouragement. Eventually, some idiots protesting the war and such began harassing him while running (some were even chasing after him apparently). He began to switch up his route and ran at random times. If I remember correctly, a couple police officers hung out around the park too. The guy was trying to show support for our troops fighting a war- and people found it necessary to harass him. It still pisses me off when I think about it. Despite this, he said nothing would stop him from finishing all 131 runs. Pretty motivated guy. It leaves no room for excuses about the heat at Ft. Benning.

The park he ran at (Iroquois) is notorious for its inclines- it's basically just a big hill with roads/trails on and around it. It still amazes me he made it through a couple weeks, let alone 131 days...
