Up until last fall deer hunting in my area of NY was limited to shotguns only. Since rifles are OK now I'm thinking of getting a new toy. I have a a .243 and a 7mm Rem mag. both of which will work. Most of my hunting locations have limited range for shooting ( timber and brush), say 100-125yds max. I'm leaning towards a larger caliber non-magnum. I like the new .338 federal, 45-70 cause it's cool, M1A .308 (because I like them) and anew one that looks like fun! The Bushmaster .450, 225gr bullet @ 2200fps. I know it is over kill but for a under 200yd gun its got lots of "Whack" to it and shouldn't Jelley up everything from the shock wave like my 7mm. Plus I think it would be a blast shooting in the off season! Comments!

well, in heavy brush out ot 150-200, the 30-30 lever still works like a charm in east Texas. nice small package that won't get hung up in the brush while stalking or moving into your hide.
your deer shouldn't be too much bigger than east TX deer either, so that's an option.

My family has a house in Inlet, upstate, Adirondacks. I hunt with my Grandpa's .32 Winch, never had a prob. When I go for bear, I have a dandy little .358 Win Mag. Dont think Ive EVER had a shot/line of sight past 50 yrds!! I walk out, find a tree, sit down, goto sleep, wake up, look around, listen, aquire and fire..... wait, track/locate, wait some more, walk up and start gutting!

I've got a New England Survivor in .308. It's got a 22" bull barrel, makes an awesome little brush gun and got it cheap at wally world

This year I dropped a large-ish doe with my Rock River M4 (.223). I was using black hills 53gr hollowpoints and an ACOG. It was a perfect heart shot from across the pasture (~200meters) and the deer is delicious! I know it's not sexy or big bore but it worked perfectly. :)
