Question about my quest for RIP

Post by Viga »

Greetings Rangers,

My question is, after many talks with my recruiter, and his boss, if I am not able to obtain an OPT 40 at MEPS. If I sign a 11x ABN contract, and bust ass in OSUT and Airborne, what are my chances at getting RIP at Airborne school? I have seen this question addressed on this forum before, I must admit, I just can't find it again.
My recruiter has told me this is a cinch so many times his face is turning blue, but I have a tendency to want things in writing, or to hear it from people that have been there, or done that.

Any guidance would be hugely appreciated.

The only way you will be have a for sure shot at becoming a Ranger is if it is in your contract. Anything else you are being told is pure "You might have a shot if" kind of stuff.

Yes it's possible to do that, but don't bank on it.

There should be no reason (unless you are not telling us something) that you couldn't get option 40 in writing in your contract.

If it is not offered, try this. Give him a piece of paper with your name and phone # on it and in big bold letters put CALL WHEN OPTION 40 BECOMES AVAILABLE and then thank him and get up and walk away.

If he is sharp, it won't take long for him to realize you are serious.

The biggest killer of you young'uns is impatience.

If there is no Option 40 slot today, don't sign up. Wait a couple of days and try again.

But make it quite plain for the recruiter: YOU WILL NOT ENLIST IF YOU CAN'T HAVE AN OPTION 40 CONTRACT.

Another killer of you young'uns is being offered exactly what you want, but you have to wait a few months before you report to BCT. Most of you guys are impatient, and go ahead and sign up for something else.

IF YOU ARE OFFERED WHAT YOU WANT, BUT YOU HAVE TO WAIT. SIGN UP AND WAIT.

I was a DEP for 11 months, but I had the 2nd Ranger Battalion as an 11B with Airborne School enroute in my contract.

Plus... the time as a DEP counts for longevity pay.

Hopefully this helps you out.
When I went to the Ranger briefing during airborne school about 2 months ago the Ranger liason asked who wanted to volunteer. Nearly all who wanted a contract got it IF they were not an 11B. When asked, the liason said it'd be atleast a year before 11B's could volunteer again for a slot during ABN school.

Viga,
WAIT until you get the OPT40 in the contract. When I signed up, I was in College and entered the DEP. Had to wait 3 months to head off to MEPS.
My recruiter was well aware I was in COLLEGE...and neglected to tell me that part of my contract COULD include paying of my student loans...and I had no idea what the hell was going on...and didn't check that box on the form....I have paid and fought with those loans for 19 years....because of one box that was not checked on a friggin' form...needless to say, I don't have a lot of faith in recruiters...

Tell him to kiss your ass 'cause "the Marines are looking for a FEW good men"...he'll call with the miracle slot within a month....
