Tasks to focus on.
1) Commo! This is a must, you can also incorporate SALUTE/SALT-W reports.
2) React to contact/break contact. Depending on what type of recon unit you're in this may vary. If you're a mounted recon unit like a cav scout platoon you might not have to break contact because those guys pack a lot of firepower, I on the other hand come from a LRS unit so in our case if we make contact, we always break it and scrub the mission.
3) Vehicle and equipment ID. You can find a lot of resources for this through Janes Defense online or the RSLC website.
4) Hide site selection and construction.
5) Land nav with emphasis on terrain association.
These were just the first things that came to mind, by no means the end-all-be-all but it's a good start.

Damn skippy. Fieldcraft and Battle Drills. Fieldcraft and Battle Drills.
If they can't land nav their asses off, and they can't get comms, they have no business in a recon Plt.
Fieldcraft to be good at you core job.
Battle drills to be able to, when compromised, kill motherfuckers until the birds come ............ or ............
E&E the fuck outta there, hmmmmm ........ fieldcraft again.

I am certain there is an FM that details current Recon Platoon tasks, but in my day it would be: Area Recon, Point Recon, Route Recon, Flank Security/Screen and Ambush.
WE NEED MORE RANGERS!
