Pull over
When I left RVN through the hospital system I had 5 weeks to go until my ETS. I was sent to Japan where I was proded, inspected, detected & then neglected as my injury was minor. I was put in a cast up to my knee and for the duration in Japan I had to get around via wheelchair. I wasn't allowed to use crutches or even have a rubber heel put on my cast. I was told not to put any weight at all on my foot to gain maximum benefit of cast. I could go anywhere on the base I wanted. Trouble was my payroll records went on to conus while I stayed in Pacific. Hence I only had money that was in my pocket when cast was placed on me. It was a real bummer to me since I put $150.00 of my pay into savings each month and after ten months I had $1500 that I couldn't touch. So one evening I was going to the movies with my buddies to see French movie by Remy Julian who made the "Italian Job" In base theaters if you came more than 5 minutes after movie started then you didn't get in. It was FEB 70 and the movie would start at 1700 & I had an appointment at 1500 but Doctor had many to see and it delayed me until 1630. That left me 30 mintues to get to theater. I was in a big hurry to make theater and was in the roadway wheeeling myself to movie when the freakin Air Force AP's (sp?) told me from their jeep, "Pull over" I pulled over and stopped, looking at my watch seeing the time drawing nearer to 1700 and I had a few more blocks to go. These AP's read me the riot act for exceeding the base speed limit of 15 MPH. My first infraction since leaving RVN. these AP's kept going on about how dangerous it was for my chair being in the road and more like I was doing 50 MPH. And they warned me with one of those "furthermore" and "If we catch you speeding again, we will confiscate your wheelchair from you." My whole world crashed around me. I became very solemn. I couldn't bear for that to happen. I started contemplating suicide. They finally left and I flew like 60 MPH to make that movie. I made it by the skin of my teeth. That was the 1st and last time I was ever pulled over in a wheelchair.
