rangermom wrote:Ok a couple questions as I have never really had much interaction with medals and commendations.

Can someone explain to me about the Bronze Star w/Valor?
Is it pretty prestigous or somewhat common?
What kind of actions merit this award?
If you are put in for it does it mean you get it?

The reason I ask is because my Infantry son called today and told me he has been reccommended for this.

I sound a bit ignorant for someone who has as much military background as I do but I just have never really dealt with awards much.
I know about the MOH and several of the lesser awards but this one not much.
Appreciate the education coming my way.
Thanks
It means your son did a better than average job, It also means he demonstrated physical courage at one point or another.

And it could be downgraded.

I was recommended for a Soldier's Medal at one point, and it was downgraded to an MSM. I wasn't disappointed, because I didn't think I deserved anything.

In any event, it does mean that someone thinks your son has done a superb job - so congrats to him.

Rangermom you should be proud of your son regardless of any award he does or doesn't get but this shows even being recommended for such an award is an honor. Like my mom and wife said, we don't care what you do or what you get we're just proud of you!

That award means he did something that was outstanding. With valor means just that. He did something outstanding and brave.

I know you're proud.
