Combat Leader Field Guide

Post by Aaron J »

I have currently just finished NO EXCUSE LEADERSHIP, TO BE AN ARMY RANGER. and am currently on A MORE ELITE SOLDIER.

Being that I am in the delayed entry program and don't leave until June 28th I am using every possible moment to study(that's why I'm not drinking beer on a Friday night).

The above books helped me in many ways but not in the area Combat operations. I did pick up in NO EXCUSE LEADERSHIP how important your TLP's and OPROD's can be in planning. I do have the Ranger Handbook but am focusing on the 12th edition of the Combat Leaders Field Guide becuase it's just as detailed in parts, and a little easier to read for a DEP piece of shit like me. I was wondering in a Rangers opinion what chapters I should drill in my head above the others, It's 360 pages of pure info so it's tough to memorize the whole book.

2. Command and Control 8. Air Assualt and Airborne Operations
3. Movement 9. Operation in Special Environments
4 Offense 10. Combat support and Service Support
5. Defense 11. Land Nav
7. Patrolling 15. First Aid
17. Individual Movement and Security

Thanks for any help,
Aaron J

Learn the little stuff first. The Ranger Creed is a good suggestion. You still have many things to memorize. The stuff your studying now is for later.

You will have a bunch of info to memorize in OSUT: General Orders, COC, Infantryman's Creed, etc. Learn that first. Then learn the Ranger Creed (perfectly). Then find a Mentor on this site, who will take you under his wing. Then go get your Tan Beret! 8)

Another mentee opens a daycare!
I'm so...proud!
Zak, your boats' not even in the same fuckin' pond as this little daydreamer.
From now on you have no friends until you complete the Ranger Assessment Phase.
You are in danger of losing focus.
Your cheerleader leadership style needs to be adjusted.
You need to learn to be the type of leader who will withold chow resupply from a platoon full of starving motherfuckers until the patrol base priorities of work get squared away.
Get your head back into the fuckin' ball game.
Now!

So I see a little friendly advice to a cherry on what might prepare him better, is only legit if you have a Tab or been in Regt?

Nope, not my intent at all.
Our man Zak has so far followed my advice to the letter and it has produced dividends.
He has a slot to Ranger School.
He starts PRC in a matter of days and he won't get many chances.
I did not mean to belittle any one.
Zak can offer friendly advice to whomever he chooses...when he gets back.
Right now he needs to be singularly focused on his near-range goal and nothing else.
Our new friend Aaron has ignored friendly advice and in his last post in his intro saw fit to address Rangers on a first name basis.
And he has an OPT-40 in his hot little hands.
Aaron step up the pace now.
You don't have much time either.
Listen to your peers and read the forum rules.
You're distracting my boy.

Thanks for the response Ranger EarthPig, Ranger Kilted Heathen, Zaknafien. I will focus more on the General Orders, COC, Infantryman's Creed and the Ranger Creed.
I was just reading through the field guide because the last thing I wanted to do was fail because I was under prepared mentally with the amount of time I have. I'm in college you know, I have more free time then anyone on this planet, except for the French for when they are at war(cheap and predictable, I'm sorry).
The sad thing is I've studied more about my future life in the Army more then I have at my University the last 4 years.

You haven't chosen an easy path.
You are not going to have a problem with OSUT.
You should have no problem with BAC.
You are starting to show that you may actually have what it takes after that.
Good luck and stick around.
