Turned 21 in Afghanistan. Luckily I wasn't the youngest!

I was the last on my team to turn 21. Spent a year & a half in Nam and still could not buy a beer after I DEROS/ETS. Old enough to die for my country, but not old enough to buy a beer, go figure.

I turned 21 in Vietnam, youngest officer in my Battalion. Promoted to Captain two months later. Strange thing about the military; as a 19 year old 2nd Lt. I was required to join the officers club and as such had all the benefits including drinking. I could also buy at the class 6 store but could not drink off post or at home on leave before going to Vietnam.

I was 21 when I enlisted. This meant that I was the one to go to the Class 6 Store to get the booze.

It was 18 when it was legal back then to purchase, possess or consume.

I thought it was the same for those my age or older.......

In NY back in 1968 to 70 it was legal for me - at 18. I turned 21 in Nam.
On way to nam stopped in Hawaii & everyone under 21 was refused alcohol.
