The battle of Buena Vista was the first fire for many of the heroes of the Civil War, years later.

How do you stop the superior Mexican cavalry from circling your lines? Find ground that sucks for horses. Buena Vista was a battlefield of gulleys and valley that would maim the horses or else make it hard to get through. The Americans also had the "new" technology of the flying gun. Artillery that was light enough and strong enough to be moved quickly from one side of the field to the other.

Though this was the first fight for many of the future War Between the States generals, it was not the US Army's first fight. Many fights had happened the year before such as the Battle of Resaca de la Palma (Brownsville, TX) and in California at Monterrey.

Most Europeans thought that the US Army would be easily defeated by the Mexican army that was modeled after Napoleon's armies. However military technology and tactics were on the side of the US
