Map Help
Hello Rangers
Can anyone tell me if military grade maps are available for civilian purchase? I hunt in some fairly large tracts on publick land in PA.
I'm an old fucker by your standards.
I don't remember if the scale is 1 to 50k- but I think so. I do remember that it was possible to get about 10 yards give or take to a location. If anyone can help I would appreciate it.
I have tried USGS maps. They don't cut it.
Thank you for any advice.

Re: Map Help
Not neccessarily free, but you can download and order products direct from USGS. http://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/
Depending what you want, it might be cheaper to download GeoPDF files from them, then take the files to a local print shop and pay for high quality prints (and lamination, if that's your thing).

Re: Map Help
Not yet Sir. Still working it.
I have bought a couple of USGS maps. They were topo but too large a scale. I really am trying to get my hands on very detailed maps that I can use for pre-planning scouting/hunting trips as well as having a map handy (to go with my compass)when I'm out in the woods.
I do use a hand held GPS but would like to be able to mark significant areas on a paper map. For example: acorn and nut production which can vary from year to year.

Re: Map Help
I can't think of the name of the site off hand, but I you search under "topographic maps" there is a site that will custom make one for you and deliver it to your door. I think it takes a week or two. When you order it, it literally is a checklist of what you want it to look like; scale, terrain interval, military grid or not, etc. The price was pretty reasonable as well. I think less than $35 a sheet.
[added:]
Here you go: http://www.mytopo.com/
I think these guys will be able to help you out. Around 20 bucks a sheet for storm resistant paper. $35 for full lamination. Folded or rolled, your choice.
Where in PA you killin' bambi?

Thanks Sleepy Doc.
I hunt in Tioga County. A lot of woods and a little steep for my old ass. But I love it.
